Estimate on cam bearing

I am buying a 95 trans am that needs a cam bearing. I am just woindering how much people think it will cist, and if anyone has had it done before and knows wat it did cost.

Thanks

Re: Estimate on cam bearing

If you can change the cam yourself you will be able to change the cam bearings as well. You will need some tools to do the job though. The labor involved will be slightly higher than just a cam swap. bearings themselvs are will be $25 or less depending on which type you get.

My questions would be how did the seller come to the conclusion the problem is the cam bearings? Is the car already apart? is it a worn bearing or did something major happen & cause the bearing to spin in the block ? Honestly, if I was buying a car with that desctiption I would treat it as if it probably needs an engine.

Re: Estimate on cam bearing

I would be skeptical of anyone selling a car that said it needed a cam bearing. There are actually numerous cam bearings and to replace them all, the engine has to be removed. The cam bearings are cheap, but the labor will be very high.

I would agree with that.. When I typed my original post I wasn't in "4th Gen F-body engine bay" mode : )

I agree bearings are cheap but the engine need to be out of the car for certain.

So whats the low down here. What was the indicator for the owner that the motor needs a cam "bearing" replaced and which one? Sounds fishy to me, and I wouldn't enter into this deal full well knowing there was an issue.

Re: Estimate on cam bearing

When I brought just the bare engine block in to have the cam bearings installed on a Gen I small block, it ran me the price of the bearings plus $35 labor.
