Oil additives

I just did an oil change and added some Lucas oil stabilizer and wow.
Oil press. is up {about 85psi} and she runs alot smoother.

My rear axle makes a lot of gear noise {Is this common?}
I'm gonna pull the axles and check the bearings and gear teeth.
I plan on adding Lucas synthetic stabilizer to the axle, with some fresh gear oil.
Do yall think I could use 85/140W or should I stick with 80/90W?

Re: Oil additives

I used to use Lucas every oil change with my Blazer. Then every time I fired it up it would start knocking. The longer it went on the longer and longer the knock stuck. Bought my Camaro and did my first oil change at 49k and through in the Lucas and it started a small knock...I changed that crap out ASAP and havent had another problem. Just a thought!

No actually I've had the same problem with that stuff...

WARNING DO NOT EXCEED 3K RPMS while running Lucas. That stuff FOAMS UP after being exposed to high throttle pressures and when it foams up you will DRAMATICALLY lose Oil PSI + have a dirty internal engine.

At first after an oilchange I noticed a good bit of PSI increase but after time, within a week sometimes my Oil Pressue would linger as low as if not lower than the quarter mark... at 70 MPH!!! I changed that crap instantly and ran straight 10W30 and had absolutely no problems... Stays just past the half mark at 70 MPH after being overdue for an oilchange for 500 miles...

Thanks guys

I wunder how they can get away with selling that $hit?

How about using a heavier weight gear oil to quiet things down in my rear axle?

Don't use Lucas period... For rear oil I'm not sure because there are some parts in there that can be very sensative but I would say it's a try and see thing... I know some Drag guys use heavier oil but normally don't recomend it for daily driving.

As far as your oil now, you should be O.K. as LONG as you don't take your car over 3K RPMS... but get your oilchanged ASAP... you'll begin to notice a tremendous droup in preasure soon.

Heavier diff lube can quiet things a bit if noise is due to worn ring & pinion, but if it's a bad bearing, it won't help.

Heads up: my previous daily driver was an 89 Formula 350. Stock muffler was too quiet so I replaced it with a Flowmaster. Started noticing a noise that I thought was a rear bearing. Most noticeable when cruising at around 65 on the freeway. Put 2 & 2 together.....

it was the Flowmaster droning.

Re: Oil additives

So should I not use stuff like "Hyper Lube" for my daily driver?

Re: Oil additives

I think me using that lube was a bad idea, it was running really sluggish today, especially in first gear, it would get stuck for a moment, I had no power. But then I checked to see if I could add any more oil, and it could've used a little, so I added some as to thin it out and it worked. Power restored.

Stay away from that stuff. Seriously. I should probably change my oil soon, huh?

I guess my car must be sh!tty too since I used as directed and got a start up knock as well. This is down in the Southern US not up here. Also when I took my engine apart to change head gaskets there was globs of what looked like fat all inside the valve covers and under the intake.

The best advice I offer is if you want the best lubrication for your engine use the best lubricant,,, 100% synhetic oil with a good filter,,, nothing is better. I think most of these oil additives are just snake oils.

As far as the rear end I also learned a lesson in that use OEM reccomendation as I went synthetic gear oil and an aftermaeket limited slip additive,,, has to change to regular gear oil and the GM gear limited slip additive as the rear would chatter around corners.

You don't need to go to BOBs the oil guy just spin the display gear thing very quickly on each side and compare the amount of air entrained in the Lucas side compared to the non Lucas side.
