buying a used hotcam kit, should I be worried?
first of all, nothing against the guy who is selling this. I just want some of the more experienced engine builders/modders opinions on this.
This is for the entire hotcam kit for a reasonable price. The guy says its used less that 50 miles. I did a search on his previous posts and there was one from when he first got the hotcam going in his car. It said the rockers were way too tight and that it bent his pushrods so they looked like "S". He has since properly adjusted the rockers and put hardened pushrods in there. I can understand why he didn't put that info in the "for sale" thread but does anyone here see any problem with grooving the lobes on the cam or damaging the rockers from them being so tight.
I asked him about it, and his answer seemed to make sense. If there was any damage it would have been to the lifters....I want to trust him, because I want a hotcam(driveability, stock torque converter). He said he would include the hardened pushrods for like 15 bucks extra.

Get some pictures of the cam. Make sure there are no pits or flat spots on the cam. Hyd. rollers usually stand up to wear pretty well cause there isn't alot of friction on them. The two stock LT1 cams I've pulled have looked almost brand new.
Update... Here's a pic of what a good condition hyd. roller cam should look like.

All the areas that have contact are shiny and there are no scars or pitts in the metal.

The cam is still in his motor right now....he wants my final decision before he pulls it. thanks for the input though. anyone else have any opinions? I guess I just want some reassurance.....I feel like a twelve year old boy thats lost in the mall, and I can't find my mommy!

Aside, just for safe measures, I wouldn't buy a used cam anyway.
I'd like to see the cam as well. However roller cams are pretty durable and as long as the cam has low miles I see very little potential for damage. Normally other parts break, pushrods, rockers, rocker studs, usually because of spring/setup problems. Their is a certain board member, who shall remain nameless, who went through about 3 or 4 sets of pushrods before he got the setup right. We recently pulled that cam and it was fine, CC305 BTW.

If I cannot see the cam, especially when the pushrods have been bent like that, I would not go near that sale.
It is not likely, but still possible that a lobe got damaged by the misadjusted valvetrain.

Thanks for all the input fellas, I've been going back and forth about what cam I want. The decision is not an easy one.
Hey greg97Z I though you were happy with your cam. I read your dyno numbers thread and that was one reason I was going to go with that cam. Now you got me all messed up.
it depends on the person. I bought a cam sight unseen with about 4k miles on it from Phil (Skarodom/Ai board Sponser) because he is a stand up guy and he runs a business that he knows that bad publicity can hurt him... but other than that, I would probably just buy new. not a huge price difference anyway.
