Please help! Headlight problem...

This one seems kind of strange to me, but I took the car out for a quick stroll around the block after detailing the engine bay( maybe the detail spray did something, but Ive power washed and sprayed all sorts of **** all in there before so I dont think thats it) and 10 seconds before I'm back at my house my left headlight pops up. Then goes down and then up then down, I then try turning on the headlights and nothing happens, then I try again and only the left goes up and down and the right does nothing. I park the car and pop the hood to have a look and the left side headlight motor is smoking and HOT. I mean it melted strait through the plastic cap that you can manualy turn to lift up the headlights. I unplugged the battery and wrapped it in a wet rag and it sizzled for a little bit so I unpluged the left side but the right still does nothing....????? Any clues?

BTW: I've never had any problems with it in the past...ever.

The going up then immediately back down (or the reverse) is a symptom of a broken raise/lower arm tab. Looks at the headlight that doesn't do this and you'll see tabs down in there that he headlight raise/lower arm hit which stops the movement of the headlight. Now, look at the light that doesn't work right and you'll probably see that at least one of these is missing.

As for why the motor is hot and smokin', that is something different. It could be that your headlight control module has fried (very uncommon though) and caused it to not shut down juice to the light when it senses high amp draw. This could be what broke the tab off although not necessarily because the broken tab is fairly common as well.

Let me know what you find. Good luck!

Actually the headlight that does nothing, passenger side, acts like it has no power at all and the one that was going up and down did so on its own whim.....I didnt touch a thing and the drivers headlight just popped up and down a few times. Then when I parked it was terribly hot and the other side still sits there and does nothing....
