Need a cat for my car\Whats the purpose of it?

Whats up i need a cat for my car. I just got some jet hot lt headers hooker y-pipe and hooker catback. Im not running any cats. I found cat by carsound (magnaflow dealer) for $31.99 on ebay is this a good cat? I have a 95 single cat firebird. Im getting alot of raspy sound from my exhaust should this cat clean the sound up? Am i getting raspy sound because with the headers its just running straight through the pipes without any restrictions? Whats the purpose of a cat? Also what size should i get 3"?

thank you

Rest assured you are making a good purchase. I bought mine from that exact ebayer and you won't be dissappointed. The raspiness would come from a gutted cat. I don't think straight pipe would cause that. Why do you need to put a cat on? For emissions? Yes it is a 3" that you need. Bottom line is Carsound makes a great cat for the money.

A cat is for emissions, nothing more. It turns all the crap in your exhaust into carbon dioxide and water vapor so its not as bad for the enviornment.

You have to have a cat !!! Ahh man, that sux, with all the crap and BS fee's I go through with here in Cali, they can suck my fat one !!! I run an off-road pipe and will never go back. The performance and sound is perfect. Cats run super hot ( hottest part on any vehicle actually) were lookin at 1200 degress here There are actually explosions in the cat that is burning up the extra fuel and making things semi clean for calis laws. Trust me, im not pulluting hardly anything, when you see cars going down the street with huge piles of white smoke behind them that is crap. But NO, Cali laws would rather BS about me putting long tubes on !!! Screw laws, and screw cats PERIOD !

I'm looking at that same cat. What model # do I need for my 94 Z with single cat coming off of a mac Y-pipe into a Flowmaster cat back? I'm told no air tube needed.
