HMMMM.. Randy your always getting car problems, OH WAIT you own an LT1, its normal then...lol.... Any way, your problem sounds to me like it could be your cat.. They get smelly every now and then, maybe time to gut it? You say its from the engine bay though, that kinda makes me wonder.. Is it at start up or after you have been driving? If its after you have been driving check your brakes and your power steering pump, make sure there is no fluid on it or around it,(just incase you took it off when you were trying to take the water pump off... Check your belt too, you may have gotten something on it and now it gets warm and burns off, coolant maybe? that crap smells bad when you burn it, I have broken many hoses and sprayed everywhere, I know very well what it smells like. <that would apply after driving or at startup.. Now if it only happens at start up you can check your air pump fittings, they sometimes leak or your rubber hoses that you moved maybe hitting the headers or the pump may be disconnected and letting exhaust gas flow to the rubber tube.. If you were smart and removed the air pump then you can X this out.. Dunno what else though..

a tiny leak of oil from the oil filter caused an unpleasant smell on my car. check for oil leaks and see if none of them get on your exhaust
