Does this sound like a bad throw out bearing?

I guess i should start at the beginning. I have had this ram clutch in my 95 formula for about a year and a half and probably have 20 miles on it. At certain RPM's when taking of in first (usually taking off slow) i could hear the Throw out bearing rattaling, but it didn't vibrate or anything. At least i allows thought that it was the TOB because i here this is a common problem with T-56's Last week i finished my cam install and a couple days later what i think is my throw out bearing started making a lot of noise and shaking the car.

In first gear it will sound like the trans is grinding and shaking when taking off. But it is not the gears. Also it only happens when the clutch engages at a certain RPM (usally around 1500) if i engage it lower or higher it doesn't make the sound. once the clutch is totally engaged it doesn't make any noise. it never happens when shifting to 2nd, 3rd, etc.

Does this sound like a bad throw out bearing to you guys? Will driveing like this damage anything?

Where can i get a new TOB if it is bad?

thanks
Tom

Sounds very strange indeed...at this point I'd have to also say it sounds like a possible throwout bearing.

Mine does the same thing as yours does. Except it is a little worse. It even makes the noise while driving. If i'm like in 3rd gear and i press the gas at a low rmp i can here the same noise. It does this in all gears. I don't really have to be at a low rpm to for it to make the noise but it is more noticeable it i am. BTW my throwout bearing is the new one that came with the slp clutch.

my 97 camaro does this and my 96 t/a i had before it did this. I think its normal.

If i am just idling along in first gear going slow with the clutch out and i step on the gas i get the rattling noise. Is this what you are talking about?

T-56's seem to have a lot of little noises.

I thought if it was the throwout bearing that it would rattle very noisily at neutral, but not when the clutch pedal is pressed???

yeah it shouldn't. But when the pedel is out it will make noise. So while they are in the process of letting it out its gonna make the more noise.

the rattle is audible when the clutch is engaged.....no matter what gear. if ya cant hear it in other gears then its just not rattlin bad enough, but as long as ur foot isnt pressin the clutch pedle then nutral, 1, 2, anything is gonna rattle........pending it is a despicable throwout bearing

Well it seems to be getting worse now. I still only does it in first gear. It is not justu a rattling. It is more of a grinding, but it doens't seem like it is from the inside of the trans. I am now thinking that it could also be the pilot bushing. If that starts to where away would that cause it to make a loud noise? I was thinking since the output shaft must want to move around more when you are taking off from a stop that if the bushing is gone that it migh be grinding on whats left of the bushing.

I hope what i just said made sense. If anyone has any idea please let me know. I think i am going to pull the trans tomorrow.

thanks

this is exactly what my car does. i replaced my clutch with an LT4 pp and it still rattles real bad idling with the cluch engaged.. when i press down on the pedal to engage the TO bearing it stops rattling completely. since this happened before and after a brand new clutch im thinking its normal.

Thanks for the help. But I am not sure that you guys get what I am talking about. The throw out bearing has always rattle. But it is doing more than rattling. It makes this sound when i am letting the clutch out at when i give it gas. If i keep the revs under 1400rpm until the clutch is let out it is fine. If i go over that i make a grinding shaking noise. It is not just a rattling noise (I know what you guys are talking about). It grinds and shakes pretty bad.

thanks

I think I have the same problem, just noticed it a week ago.

1. the throwout bearing always did the infamous t56 rattle before

2. the car now shakes (you can feel it in the rear & hatch) right as the clutch is let out at certain rpm's (i think 1200-1500, anything above or below is fine)

3. the vibration/shake becomes much more noticable under-load (uphill or with passengers)

4. noticed this happening first in 3rd gear, now it's noticeable in 1, 2, 3. this is not the common high speed vibeshaft shake or a tire/wheel problem

ANY HELP is much appreciated!

thanks - Brian
