Question I have a humming/howling noise coming from the rear of my car

I have a 97 LT1. I have just noticed a humming or howling type noise coming from my car, specifically the area of the rear axle. It makes this sound when the car is running. It makes the noise while I drive, while its stop, and even while it is idling. I have never noticed this before today, but the sound is very noticable, so it must have just started recently.

I first noticed it while driving today. When I started to slow down for a stop sign, the howling noise began. I though that maybe it was the rear brakes, but once I came to a complete stop, the noise continued.

Any ideas what this may be? Could it be a hole in the exhaust? Or is it the rear end? Is this the sign of something major going to break?

Well i get like a hissing sound from the back off my car. Near the left rear tire, from under the car. I'm pretty sure its the fuel pump. That is probably what you are hearing but probably your fuel pump makes a little different tone then mine.

Is the fuel pump located behind the rear axle, near the muffler? Because this is where the sound is coming from. I though the fuel pump was located under the driver's seat toward the front of the car.

And if it is the fuel pump that is maing this sound, does that mean it needs to be replaced?

The fuel pump is inside the gas tank. If have not heard any noise until now, the pump could be telling you it is on it's way out or that the fuel filter needs to be changed. Another possibility is that the vent valve is stuck. It is a small plastic valve on the end of a hose and is attached by the the LH brake hose bracket on the rear end.
