My question is:

Does pennzoil suck?

I have read so many different opinions on here and I want to take a survey of what the general preference amongst fellow F- Body owners.

I usually use the Quaker State synth blend (it used to have a red Z on the label lol). I've also used the Mobil 1 full synth but haven't noticed anything different between the two. As long as you keep changing it religiously, it shouldn't matter too much.

I've heard a lot of bad comments about Pennzoil from not protecting well to gunking up the engine. I've always had good luck with it though. I run 5w 30 on my 90K mile car. Had the engine apart two years ago for cam swap and once this spring for head gasket swap and so far I haven't seen any signs of either problems.

Yes,

This thread is for real.

No offence injected, but I didnt ask for sarcasm, just honest opinions on which motor oil is better for your engine. These are OPINIONS only, by fellow f-body owners on which oil they like the best.

You're comparing apples to oranges when you compare synthetics to standard oil. Synthetics have much better specs. Pennzoil is a good standard oil. Look for the starburst symbol on oil containers.

Thanks for the reply moparman, I have used Pennzoil for years, but when I took apart the top of my motor, there was a noticeable amount of sludge in the lifter valley as well as the heads. I am contemplating switching over to 100% synthetic in the near future. Other than a little more noise from the valvetrain, is there anything I should be ready for? As well, do all of you recommend Mobil 1 ?

The only thing i've heard of problem wise...is going from synthetic to regular (very few people developed leaks)...not the other way. I love Mobil 1 and a friend uses it in his 89 stang. He pulled the oil pan and it looked brand new...that was with 140,000 miles.

Joe

BTW...he started using it at around 40k miles...when he bought the car. Those were a VERY HARD 100k miles too.

Yes, I know they make a synthetic, but I think he was talking about the standard oil.

I usually buy whatever full synthetic is on sale at Wally world. Sometimes you can catch a good deal on Mobil1. I bought some in the 5 qt container once for $7. Last week they had Castrol synthetic for $17 in the 5 qt container.

I didn't notice any valve train noise when I switched to synthetics.

Castrol GTX 10W-30. Good stuff.... I would run Mobil1 on a newer engine, but this 108k baybee leaks enough as it is.

lol! I thought only my wife called it that!

I've seen Pennz mentioned as being pretty decent of late.. To me they still have that Hyundai stigma though. I just couldn't bring myself to buy it.

Mobil 1 has done right by me for so long now, I'm pretty much hooked. Good stuff.

AMS, Redline, Royal Purple, Mobil, or Castrol synthetic. pennzoil sucks, but quacker state is worst.
