Good question. It pings fine when it's down, so it's not a connectivity issue. Something's up with the server itself.

Mr. Frezza, any ideas?

Many times this weekend, especially yesterday, at random times whenever you click on a forum or a thread in the forum, or even reply to a thread you're in, it takes several minutes to load the new page. There have been times where the site was inaccessible for 20-30 minutes in the past. This hasn't been limited to just this weekend, but it's been pretty frequent the last few weeks.

Any particular time?? I've been on the site quite a bit and haven't seen the problems you are describing. I need more info to investigate.

It hung up for a couple minutes at a time a couple of times between 10PM and 10:30PM last night. Also, there are a couple of threads in the lounge with titles along the lines of "who broke it?" that came up right after a long hang-up on the site.

2:00 PM EST yesterday. It was unavailable ("server not responding" error messages) from my work and my home. Total downtime was ~5 minutes.

OK, happened just now. I first noticed the lack of response around 1:05 EST, and it lasted until about 1:15.

I could still ping the server during this time, but trying to telnet to port 80 resulted in the connection timing out after about five minutes.

I've seen this kind of thing happen on our servers when the proc load spiked really high for whatever reason. Connection requests didn't get refused outright, they'd just hang and eventually time out until the proc load came back down.

Are you guys monitoring proc load on the server at all? That'd be my first guess; the outages are way too long IMO to be Apache restarting or croaking, plus you'd expect outright refusals instead of timeouts.

Hope this helps.

Just did it again for about five minutes. I don't know how to do any of the fancy stuff Gutterboy did to test stuff though.
