Ignition on position don’t work but will crank and start until let of key

My 96 camaro when I turn the switch to on it doesn’t work. No fuel pump sound no dash/warning lights only radio will work but will crank and start when putting it in the start position just to die when I let off the key if I put a little pressure on key and hold it their it will run fine. I replaced ignition switch and still seems the same when turning it to the on position don’t want to have my new keys cut till I know I didn’t but a bad ignition switch. What else could it be?

Did you check the harness connector for burned contacts/wires? Did you adjust the rod that connects the key cylinder to the switch?

This guide from Shoebox may remind you of a step you missed.

Ok what I replaced was the key/lock cylinder didn’t require the entire steering colum taken out. Looks like a lot of work, and I did skim threw that write up but blew it off thinking it was something unrelated. Was hoping for a simple hidden relay 🙁 but now I bet that’s the issue is their a way to test it? Or just do it? I’m pretty handy and do all my own work for the most part but never a steering colum. changing the lock cylinder was kinda out of my wheel house but once I had the right tools was way easier than expected.

As the write-up says, you don't have to remove the steering column, but it allows more room to work. Your problem definitely sounds like it is switch related.

Sounds like you changed out the mechanical key cylinder switch in the upper column and not the actual electrical ignition switch on the lower column. Check out the attached illustration to make sure we're talking about the same switch.

Another suggestion.... NEVER write off anything you find on Shoebox's site. It is the most complete and accurate LT1 site on the 'net.
