Re: What weight oil, 5w-30 or 10w-30?
A 30 weight oil is almost too thin for an LT1. Alot of people have suggested runnin a 10W40. However, going with a 30 weight difference, the oil begins to loose its lubricating properties. 20W40 MAY be a nice summer oil. MAY ...
I just use Mobil 5W30. And it has always looked like brand new when I pulled the valve covers off and such.

I'm all for Royal Purple 10w30. RP 20w50 would be even better if you wanna let it warm up every morning..
So far so good I've been using it for a while and it's been clean and I did notice a small oil pressure increase 5-10psi when I switched. Whatever you do, make sure its synthetic.

For winter go with 10-30 since its colder, hotter months I go with 20w50, cause here in Souther Cali, it gets damn hot!!! If mileage is high above 75k, generally go with a thicker oil.
One summer, I ran 10 30 and oil press was just above red when idling, oil thinned out to much.
Warming up the car is good to but I think let it warm up for 2-3 min, then drive it slowly til car warms up, cause oil only starts to lubricate and do its thing when its warm.

When you have spent 15 summmers in 110-120+ degrees anything at or below a 100 feels like a very nice cool day
I run 10w30 mobile1 synthetic. I would like it to run cooler in the summer but the car never gets too hot. I am going to put a 160* thermostat and a fan controller on the car to help keep it cooler.

There are a few local fbody guys that run oil analysis frequently (i.e. after every oil change), and they report very good results with german castrol 0w30. This is what I am using.

I am tired of trying to dispell all the myths and missinformation on oil, that link is a wonderful one for those who choose to actually learn something about oil rather than keep on spreading missinformation.
