Use back and forth motions to apply wax, does not matter what motions you use when you remove it, use white 100% cotton toweling like Fieldcrest Royal Velvets or Fieldcrest Charismas. Use the search function for key words, there is already plenty of good info on this site, just gotta look for it.

Hi Kevin, when you say to apply the wax in a back and forth motion, does it matter if it is from bumper to bumper or roof to rocker panel?

Back and forth, in the direction of air flow over the car (bumper to bumper.)

Would it matter if you had applied it in a circular/swirl way for years and then switched to a back-and-forth motion? Would making the change from circular to back-and-forth create more swirls or spiderwebs?

Jeff,

It's not going to hurt anything if you start polishing back and forth now, if anything it'll help hide some existing swirls. And, you'll probably notice LESS swirls because polishing in this manner helps to minimize those negative effects. Anytime you rub your car in circular motions you run the risk of spiderwebbing and swirls. This goes for anything you rub onto the car. Even if you're washing, it's best to wash in straight patterns not circular.
