Question Clay bar. Worth the time and money?

I dont think so. I used one for the first time today and I am not a big fan at all. Most of th stuff looks like it would come off with just a good polishing. I do agree it works well with some stubborn stuff but that isall I am using it for now. Not doing the entire car again ever. Too time consuming and $.

time consuming? it took me about 30 minutes to clay bar my Z28 when I had it. Spray half the hood, run clay back and forth, dry. It doesn't take that long, not as long as polishing or waxing a car. From what I saw after I used it, it made a very big difference in the way the paint felt, smooth as glass, and added a hair more shine too. To each thier own I guess, eh, some don't think Zaino is worth it but they'll spend $600 on a Borla when they could just get a cutout (basically what a Borla is) for $35,and get set of headers with what they saved.... Thats a whole other topic though

No polish could ever remove the embedded contaminants that a clay bar can. As far as time consuming, it only takes about an hour if you take your time to do it right. And, clay usually costs less than $20 per bar. Personally, clay was the best thing, next to Zaino of course, that I ever did to my finish. It's as smooth as glass and then some, and it's been a few years since I last clayed the entire car. Too bad you didn't have better results though. Clay is probably the best thing that happened to the automotive detailing world in years.

It took me about 45 min. to do the entire car. I guess the reason I was a little disappointed in it was from the rave results everyone gets from it. It did a nice job but now I am spending almost another hour for something I think doesnt give the results for the time.

How often do you guys use it? Maybe I will do it only every other month or so. Not everytime I wax my car though.

I usually use clay once every 6 months or so, you'll know when you need it when you run your hand over the paint and it feels rough, you shouldn't need to use it everytime you polish your ride....

Good luck

Clay bars are one of the MOST important consumer car detailing items to come out in the last ten years, hands down.

A clay bar will remove any imbedded contaminants on your paint. For example, the rear bumpers on 4th gen F-bodies are notorious for getting dirt imbedded in them. Feel your back bumper and if it feels rough to the touch, this is the kind of stuff a clay bar will help remove.

When I first did mine, I had owned my car for about two years. The rear bumper was always rough feeling. Once I tried the clay bar though, I was very impressed with the results. When I was done, the clay bar was a nice burnt orange color (a fresh Zaino clay bar is yellow) but my bumper was smooth as a baby's butt afterwards.

BTW, I use the rear bumper as an example, you should clay the whole car. You will be amazed at what a clay bar can pick up.

I think clay is awesome. Back bumper test mentioned above is best proof. I only clay mine whole car once a year, but do the front end and back bumper as needed. Clay, a little Zaino, slick as a minnows ***.

OK Ryan, if you need to compare, my two saturns, both black, one has been clayed and zainoed, the other waxed with meguiars from day one. The waxed doesn't hold a candle to the clayed car. My son who now has the waxed car wants me to clay his as he can see the difference in look, shine and keeping it clean...dream on sonny boy. And the 92 was clayed and zainoed this past summer and the results were very positive as well. My new cutlass awaits the clay bar next...

What a coincidence. I just came in from the garage after claying my T/A for the first time ever. I bought a ZAINO kit. The car is drying and I am about to use the conditioner on it once I'm done checking my email. I did the front half the other evening, and it's never been smoother. I've owned this car for over eleven years, by the way.

The spoiler are rear bumper have always been bumpy, even after waxxing. The clay bar came off looking black, and the spoiler is incredibly smooth. I was thinking of painting the car next year, but the way things are turning out, I think I can put off the paint job for yet one more year!

For pictures, check out the SIG below.

Zaino clay bar works for me!

Every time I've done a demo with clay, the person has ALWAYS bought some. They can tell an immediate difference in the feel.
