Rear Diff Fluid change....

Hey guys, I've finally gotten around to getting this changed...

I went to Mr. Lube for it, and paid 45 bucks for the fluid, additive and labour... Not bad really, but I would of prefered to do it myself... But oh well!

I've been noticing a slight 'clunking' from the rear on take off lately and so far, that seems to have gone away. Its been (I'm sad to say) around 2 1/2 years and perhaps 15-20, 000 KM's since the fluid has been changed so it was definately time!

The fluid (the dude showed me) was rather sludgey and as he said, very bad... He also offered some kinda additional 'gear saver' fluid but I had no idea what it was or if it was even some kinda slick 50 type stuff... I didn't get it (even tho it was only 20 bucks).

I do plan on taking the cover off and checking out the Auburn Pro diff thats in there tho, to see how its looking... I also have a MAC cover (I noticed the GP on this, and while I don't know alot about it, mine seems? great so far) and 4.10's in there that i'd like to inspect as well.

My coolant is also in dire need of changing. I have NEVER changed it in the life of the car (I've had it roughly 6 years!!) How bad is this?? hehehe. The guy tested it, and said what ever chemcial that goes bad is quite high and causes the rad to build pressure and leak. They charge 70 bucks for a full flush (15 litres they use for the flushing?) and refill of fluid. I'll look into what it takes to do this myself however...

My poor car has been neglected for the past 2 years as i've moved provinces and been extremely poor due to lack of work while in Calgary, but I'm finally getting this things fixed up and I'm wondering if anyone can think of more things I should look into replacing or fixing?

In the past 6 months I've done:
- 2 new O2 Sensors
- New Cat (thx Matt, I still owe you a beer for this one!!) under warrenty ;)
- Intake leak fix
- Tranny fluid change
- Rear End fluid change
- Oil changes (These at least were always done on time)
- Fuel Filter
- Plugs (A year ago)

I plan on the following within the next few months
- New wires (the current MSD 8.5's are about 40,000 km and 3-4 years old)
- New coil
- New opti (My car has stalled several times and I repeatedly get code 36, as well as 16 when it stalls... I need to verify the harness however to make sure thats not the culprit, but even then, there's a 130,000 kms on the car now and its perhaps time for an opti anyways?)
- New Brakes - desperately needed, rotors and all :(
- New Tires - desperately needed
- Fuel Pressure gauge (I like being able to see these things and tell how the car is doing, hence my ScanMaster... even for a mostly stock car)
- Headers - So Payam will stop whining how stock my car is, hehe
- Clutch - My car is hard to get into First and Reverse at times (never happened once the whole day tho... its weird, only happens sometimes) So I would like to get the tranny dropped and that checked out

that'll be about it for this new 2003 year however... But with any luck the new tires will go on new 17" wheels, and the new brakes will be the C5 hardware w/ adapters

I failed aircare last time as well, and got a conditional pass, so I have that coming up soon as well, and I hope and hope I pass... I shouldn't have any problems with all the maintence I have done and have planned...

So if anyone can think of any other small maintence things I'm missing I'd appreciate the input!

Thx!!

Jeff

Sleeper... Yea man, I actually have a Hanes manual here, but for the little extra cost of the fluid changes, and as I only have parking on the street and no ramps or anything I figured waht the hell, for the fluid changes i'll just bring it into Mr. Lube...

But your right, Lots of ppl here help, I had Ted help me with my Fuel Filter over at his place, which was great as he has a nice slab of concret for a parking lot...

I did manage to fix my intake leak on the street outside my house tho as I didn't have to jack it up or anything...

For anything major (when my opti goes in) I'll be begging people for help ;) And I have no problems buying beer or other party favorites, hehe

Andy, While those are far from my ideal choice (I want either OZ Comp's, Win Enkei's or perhaps some killer HRE's) I may just take you on the offer, Just so I can go head with my C5 brake choice... I NEED 17" wheels for that, so if I can get some to hold me over, that'll work as well...

Sooo, when does spring roll around here on the west coast? :) And how cheap is cheap, and what sorta rubber (how much tread left sorta thing?) are we talkin about? :)

Thanks tho guys!

Jeff...

Spring= For me, is after I get my tax return

Rubber= Fulda 275 40 17's (ZR rating) with about 50% tread left at present time. They are a German brand and from what I have read about them, they're a decent mid range priced tire with long tread life.

Inexpensive= This all has to do with how interested you are with them. I wouldn't see you paying that much over $1000cdn with rubber which I think is pretty reasonable considering the tires cost $1200 alone.

Thanks,

Andy
