looking @ buying '99 Camaro SS 6 speed

Hey everyone... I’m currently looking at buying this 1999 Camaro SS 6 speed. The car has 90,000 miles on it... kinda high i know but they are only asking $7000 obo. It was driven by a lady so im hopping it has been babied. A buddy of mine sent me this pic and im taking look at it today and will get more pics. So far it looks really clean. When I talked to them they told me it has the lt1 in it...LOL ... I said wow that’s really nice. Is there anything I should pay attention to when look at it?

let me know what you think

Welcome!

I don't know why nobody responded to your post sooner; usually the forum is a lot more active.

Anyway, 90k is pretty normal, maybe even a little low, for a 10-year-old car. $7k seems like a reasonable price.

Since you're new I don't know if you know, but a '99 SS would have the LS1, not the LT1.

I can't see your picture (it's blocked for me at work; yes, I'm at work on a Saturday night ). What color is it? What options? Does it have leather, etc?

Yea i knew about the lt1 / ls1 thing. I thought it was funny that the people didnt know what they bought....

the car is Pewter and is fully loaded with gray leather.

I'm home now and can see the picture. It looks like it's in good shape. Take it for a drive. If all is well, I say buy it!

The main trouble spots on these cars are:
* Failing / excruciatingly slow window motors, especially on the passenger side.
* Piston slap when cold (harmless, but the sound is annoying).
* The shocks weren't all that great when new; at 90k, you'll probably want to install something better. Don't bother with OEM replacements, even for a daily driver!
* Worn outer driver's seat bolster
* Slight water leak where the front of the t-top meets the door window -- especially noticeable if you take it through a car wash.
* Some people say that the speakers in the optional Monsoon stereo blow too easily, but I crank the volume all the time and have never had a problem with mine.

The engines are pretty much trouble-free. At 90k, it's getting close to time to do spark plugs (if the current owners haven't already). That's not a fun job on these cars - #7 is a serious pain. I say buy a set of longtubes and do the plugs while you have it all taken apart. That's what I'm going to do.

The T56 tranny is pretty good, too. If you're into drag racing, avoid powershifting -- you can bend the 3-4 shift fork. I bent mine and it got stuck in 4th gear as I was going through the traps. I had to limp it home 75 miles, 4th gear the whole way! I had it rebuilt with a steel fork and some performance upgrades, and I installed a Pro 5.0 shifter when I put it back together.

Your '99 has a different clutch than mine ('01 and '02 cars got the C5 Z06 clutch); I've heard not-so-great things about the older ones. They're generally fine, but the newer one is stronger.

Welcome! Good find! You CAN get lower mileage cars in that price range too but you might have to travel a little further to get it.
