Stock LT1 goes 10.89

I took the Firebird out last week after a 3 year break from the track. The best pass last time out was 11.003 @ 120. This time the best pass was 10.89 @ 118. It's way low on MPH, but still ETs pretty good. Last time out it had 117k miles; it now has 140k miles. The motor is all stock; it has the stock exhaust manifold, "y" pipe, paper filter, intake tube, and throttle body. Here's a video.

Let me be the first to say, WHA WHOO!!! ;) Now let me ask, how much spray does it take to run that fast? I'm new to this power adder stuff.

Wow that sucker must be very light judging the mph. I would say a 150-175 shot at about 3200lb raceweight with driver? Congrats on the new best!

Are you the guy I read about awhile back that made your own nitrous kit with a scuba tank and what not? Thats awesome on the time! Congrats!

andy katzelis 11-04-2007 12:55 PM

Thanks.

It's a 180 shot with a cold bottle to keep the hit down - got to keep the stock rear end in one piece. The solenoids are still under the driver seat (also softens the hit). It only ran a 1.52 60'er.

Additionally, the top end performance really fell off. I only picked up 20 MPH in the second half of the track. I'm not sure if it's the milage or if something is really tired?

That's me from the July 2006 issue of GMHTP.

This was going to be my last ditch effort at the World Record for stock motor on nitrous: 10.86.

I'm thinking of giving her one more try. What do you guys think?

valve springs are probly gone

Amazing! How much does it weigh??

I just ran a 10.93 @ 124 on stock short block and heads. I still can't beleave what your doing without exhaust and a cam. Thats rolling out pretty good. I wished I had hit the diet as hard as you did.

I even sprayed a bigger shot.

I think we'd like to see a vid of your white firebird on kill going down a slick track. Last time I saw it people on the line were geeked that you didn't get out of it.:)

Can you guys say 9's sideways at half track?

You might be right, I looked at the runs from 3 years ago, it only picked up 22-23 mph in the back half of the track; not stout. It could just be the lack of good breathing (headers). The stock "y" pipe is pretty sad where it joins together as one (there's all sorts of extra metal disrupting airflow). It looks like a closing clamshell. Or it could just be the small (stock) cam? I don't know what's the stock motor designed for, mileage wise? I should also point our that the motor was riddled with detonation this time out - poor fuel choice; tons of retard (it could be just that simple).

Last time on the scales it was 3300 pounds and I'm a little heavier now at 175#.

I posted the videos of the "old heap" under seperate cover. In all fairness many people have recorded their very best times at OC. I have some work to do.

Congrats on the new times. I remember reading about your car in GMHTP, I was very impressed with what you put together for such little cost. :thumb:

How do you manage a 1.5 60' ???

andy katzelis 11-08-2007 04:52 PM

Thanks. It's been alot of fun and a real eye opening experience: attention to the small stuff a tenth here a half a tenth there.

Does "9 inch slicks on Summit Steel Rims" answer your question?

Or are you talking about something else? Three years ago the 60's were 1.50. This time was to conservative with the 1.52 60'ers.

great times!! makes me sick to my stomach though to think i have a mild cam 355 on a 300 shot and i only run 11.5 :( but it gives me hope that it can go alot faster if i get the stock gear out of it!! congrats on the times!!
