MSD 3-stage retard box automatically retards 4 degrees from original setting?

MSD 3-stage retard box automatically retards 4 degrees from original setting?
According to the instructions the MSD 3-stage Retard Control Box says "When the Three Stage Retard Control is installed the ignition timing will retard approximately 4 degrees from its original setting. After installation, the timing should be checked and adjusted as necessay." If so that sucks cause I will have to send my pcm off again to get it advanced 4 degrees.
Also I have a guage that monitors retard. Whenever I have this set up to retard for nitrous will my guage show it retarding?
