Post 12 bolt is installed!!!

Started yesterday, ended today. I dont have power tools, & I like to take my time, double check, tripple check.

Took it down the road a few miles at a slow pace, waiting to hear unusual sounds. The only sound I got is this unbearable howing from the gears. I hope that eases up, I'll go nuts.

Had ABS INOP light on, along with brake light (even though brake was completely off). Went 2 miles in reverse also, at a slow pace, then home. Stopped in the drive & left the car running while I swept out the garage, the car suddenly stopped running, instantly, on it's own, and the lights came on (it is getting dark because of rain coming in). The dam car is possesed. I got in started it up, and ABS & brake light went away.. Go figure.

So, got a few more hear cycles to get in, and I want to get the car on a lift & check every bolt with an air gun, just to make sure, then I can hammer it down & check this out.

Missed the dam UPS guy while running for parts.. I think it was the cam.. Maybe I'll do an early heat cycle & after a few hrs of cooldown, start breaking it down for the cam install...

Question

Harold,
Are you serious about the howling gears?
If so don't drive it. Get a hold of the vendor and get it fixed.
When we put the 12 bolt in Rod 442's car it was and as far as I know still is as quiet as a stock rear.

Got home at 6pm today. So far I've got the Piece O SHEIT 10 bolt out and everything disconnected. I just finished putting the 12 bolt up and in. Got the springs and LCA's back on it. Tomorrow I have to get my exciter rings and bearings pressed on. Should have it back together by 5PM or so. Do some heat cycles and we're off! If I hear howling I'm going to be PISSED!

My Moser gears also howl, and it says right on Moser's sight that their gears are going to howl because of the high nickel content in them which makes them stronger.

Just turn the radio up!!

If it's going to be something that I have to live with, then I might as well go back to the bullets & have everything loud.

I'll take it through a few heat cycles & see how it works out. It was my cam that was here already. Why the hell would I have to pay $21 COD on the cam? If not for that, they would have left it. Dam, now I gotta stay home all day. At least it's coming together.

James, the noise is when you give it gas, and goes away when you let off. Is this typical to what you have Chad? Or Rod? I was hoping for something quiet, but I understand that they put more nickel in the gears now to make them stronger. I'll warm them up again & see what shakes out before calling the vendor. No wheelie shots James, for about a month, I gotta figure everything out first, & get piece of mind. Hope yours works out Steve. Mine did take more than the 3 Qt's provided, I didn't every think it would stop taking in fluid.

Sounds like there is too much backlash in there. When I replaced the posi in the 10 bolt I created the same issue. I never adjusted for the backlash. I'm guessing I had about .005 to .007 backlash in there. The new rearend here has maybe .002 backlash at most. It's TIGHT! Watch me still bitch about it when I fire it up.

I've got 3 1/2 quarts of oil, we'll see how well it comes together.

Why did the cam come COD? Mine came in a box and they left it at the door.

My Moser whines all the time, it doesn't change at all on accel, coast, or decel. The 10-bolt I had that Modern Musclecar set the 4.10's up on were quiet on accel and coast but would howl on decel.

I just did the normal break in that Moser recommends: run in forward and reverse for 3 minutes(did on jack stands), take for a drive to get to temperature and let cool. Then I went racing the next day at M6.

Harold... last night I did my 12" installation, went slow, double/triple thrusted, etc... just like you!

Derty... I got new exciter rings last month,
wife loves them!! You musta got the wrong size if you have to press them on! My XX-LG.'s slip right on with a little KY jelly.

Chad... I've got $2.00 worth of nickles to put into my rear axle, would that be enough to get a good/high nickle content? Do I have to melt them or just put them in out of my pocket??

HInk

Hink, no more crack for you!! BTW, if the shaft was too big, then obviously the exciter wouldn't just slide right in. If yours did, then maybe you have issues

$2.00 ought to be just enough, throw them in there & let us know how that works out...

Ya, lots of room to stretch out here, forward or reverse, ha ha. Try that in the city.. I feel sorry for you guys It's not the tractors you have to worry about, it's the dam deer.

In defense of the rear, the installer says that they were set up at .009, bu they are Richmond, and I haven't heard any good things about the noise on those. He is sending me, free of charge GM motive gears & paying to have someone install them. Andy, get ready to work!

Appears that was a "Brokerage COD" charge on the cam. WTF..

Well, gotta go & get ready to install the cam. See ya.

Well, just got done doing some hot laps around the neighborhood with my 12 bolt. Everything is great, it only howls like an 18 year old when coasting. Under power and decel it doesn't make a noise at all. We'll see what it's like on the highway now. I'll be over by about 3:30 Harold.
