Can I pass NJ Emissions with no cats, O2 Sims, on an OBDII inspection test?
Inspection is coming due, I have hollow cats, but I do have o2 Sims. NJ is testing a new program where they don't test emissions on the tailpipe, or on the dyno, they instead plug into the computer and check for trouble codes. I am thinking that since the o2 sims tell the computer everything is in perfect running order, then I just might be able to pass. What do you think?

The new OBD2 test is really too new to be sure. They just started using it here last month. My guess is that if ther scaner to is just looking for active or logged faults it should pass. But last I heard, they were also checking for validity of the program in the PCM, to make sure it hasnt been altered in any way. So if you've have a modified PCM, they will know by looking at the checksums. But a stock PCM and o2 sims should not be a problem. The 02 sims trick the PCM into thinking the cats are still there and working properly... therefore no faults codes and you should pass. Just pray they dont look under the car with the ol' mirror. But I belive they are still doing a visual test. Give it a shot... and let us know what happens.

I got OBDII tested in May... so it didnt' start last month... And they didnt do a visual on me. I guess I was lucky

NJ just started the "OBD-II computer scan" test - no dyno - in August. But for now, it is only for 1998 and newer cars. They expect to extend the program to include 96/97 around the first of next year.

oh yea... yes i got OBDII'd in may at Cherry Hill's inspection station... yet they Dyno'd my dad's SS 2 weeks earlier.. Don't ask me ?

The OBD2 testing officially started in August, but there were probably alot of people who got it earlier. They were "testing" out the new system randomly I belive. Anything prior to 1998 will still go on the dyno... for now. OBD1 will probably always have the dyno.
If I read that right I think its anything newer than '01, the inspection is good for 4 years now instead of 2. Reason being that the new OBD2 systems are so good that the computers will know when something is wrong. And since the cars will be under warranty consumers are more likely to have them fixed because it wont cost them $$.
As for the modified PCM, I have been wondering the same thing. I was told that they will be checking for the validity of the flash file in the PCM to be sure that it has not been altered. If thats the case then a modified PCM will fail the new test right off the bat. But time will tell I guess.
BTW, theres a nice man in Maple Shade who can still "take care" of your problems....
