Z28 owners that have the SS hood (need help inside)

I was wanting the SS hood but I already have the K&N CAI and do not want to make the hood functional. I still however want the air to go under in the engine compartment. This way it is cooler under the compartment b/c my headers make it so hot under there. Does this make any logical sense if so will it be alright to do so?? Has anybody done this already? I know not the best ? but any help will be appreciated.

before i got my ram air set up i had a cai and my ss hood functional. I don't see any reason you can't do it that way. One thing is if you hood doesn't come functional and you have to cut the scoop to let fresh air in you may want to reconsider making it functional. I do work at a dirty place but my engine bay is 100x's more dirty with the functional SS setup. The dirt just blows right in.

didn't consider the dirt hmmm. Anyone know the cheapest place to buy an SS hood?? for my 94 z28

I got the American Sports Car Design SS hood and I love it. Just got it back from the shop and they told me that they barely had to do any shaving to it. It fits perfectly. I am very happy with the quality of the hood. I got it from www.ls1speed.com for about $800.

fiberglass fabrications... paid 400 bucks for it or something like that.. non functional..

just change your thermostat to a 160 and have your computer programmed to activate the fans at 180 degrees. Then you'll have zero heat problems.

if i were you id make it functional i have no problems with dirt but i do wipe out my engine bay once a week just to keep it clean . . so when i pop the hood to show of my engine its always clean

how exactly do u make the hood functional like how do u cut the hole out??

speed76demon 10-14-2003 06:47 PM

no help??

here's the deal bro...I have a Suncoast SS hood for me Z...although not OEM its fit is good....the hole is open in the scoop when you get it from Suncoast meaning air is coming into your engine compartment...dyno #'s show that CAI works better than making the hood functional so I stayed with my CAI and just left the hood open...I don't have any dirt problems like mentioned by someone in an earlier post....I paid $600 for the hood from Suncoast....that's the way to go IMO

that's how my t/a is.. bought hood used and it was functional, my car has slp cai on it, no real dirt problems, and i drive my car about 200 miles a week

what about water problems? water + opti = bad

GeneCamaro 10-15-2003 01:36 AM

water won't get into it. You can do some more stuff to the Sun coast creations hood to let more air in. If you get the hood feel under the scoop, the lid spacing is pretty small. If you are able to remove whatever is there you should be getting more air into it. I felt mine and there is definetely something there, the space for air to come is pretty narrow. Just never have the time to go mess around with it or take the hood off to see what it is.....

I ran my car with my ss hood and a moroso cai for a short while. i ran the ram air intake without seals and it sucked horribly. I put the seals on it from slp and it came alive. The moroso was good down low, but the ram air blows it away up top. I can hang with ls1s over 110 where before they would start pulling. It did make temps cooler under the hood though when running the cai. But, in my opinion the ram air is way better. Just my .02

I guess a consideration would be how many times you run your car at 110 mph or higher for the ram air to be of value over the CAI.

Sorry, that is not necessarily what I meant. I was meaning to say the ram air is better on the top end in general not just at top speeds. It blows the cai away up top. Its about the same in low rpms for cai and ram air (below 2500). Hope that helps clarify
