Wont start help

waterpump went and ruined the optispark or im guessing is why my car wouldnt run I talked to a friend of mine who said to just change the cap and rotor and the waterpump and it will be fine. so i did that and plug wires, i triple checked to make sure wires were in the right order and they are. i know people are gonna say i could have put the opti on wrong but its a 94 it only goes on one way. tried to start the car turns over but doesnt start all it does is backfire and blows out black smoke. any ideas id really like to get it going and i dont have money to keep putting in the wrong parts to see if it works

If you only replaced the cap and rotor, why are you talking about installing the opti wrong? If that is all you did, it didn't have to come off!!!!!!!

Second the water can damage the low voltage feedback side of the opti and cause a DTC so it should be scanned since one of the DTC,s will not light the SES.

Back firing can indicate the firing sequence is screwed up. To eliminate the chance of the opti being installed wrong ( I still don't see why you removed it). Pick a cylinder and put it at TDC. Then remove the distributor cap and be sure the rotor is pointing in the direction of the location of that cylinders contact point as if the cap were in place. Either a couple of plug wires are crossed or shorting or the opti is indexed wrong.

Several peeps have found a way to put even the un-vented optis on wrong. I always suggest lining up the rotor BEFORE putting them on.

Impossible to say. If you reinstalled incorrectly, that could be your problem.

checked the indexing and according to the key thats going together right but the rotor doesnt seem to be pointing in the right direction for some reason maybe it is we were just not 100% on what contact is the one for cylinder 1 thought we could just put the rotor on facing the other way but it only goes on one way.

Assuming you have #1 exactly at TDC. The contact in the cap is located just slightly left(viewed from the front) of the 6 O'Clock position. Sort of between 6 & 7 O'Clock. Be damn sure you have 1 exactly at TDC and not 180 out.

i bet the opti sensor is dirty (bad)... which means you will have to replace it... OPITIES SUCK

FYI: to save you some time the next time... you can start the car before putting the water pump on to see if it's going to start... but don't let it run too long...
