I am planning on converting my '93 style opti to the '95 when I build my 396. I was calling around and just for laughs I called Autozone and Advanced Auto Parts to see if they could get the Opti's. Well...the 95 opti was $147 at advanced auto and $129 at Autozone. My question is has anyone ever ordered on of these distributors. Are they GM distributors or some cheap opti that won't last 1000mi. I was wondering what you guys thought b/c I am planning on ordering in a couple of weeks and I dont want to waste the money on these distributors if they are junk.

I put one in my car, no problems so far. The casting is the original Delco part, and I couldn't tell any difference between my old one and the one they sold me. They have a lifetime warranty too, something GM ones don't. The way Opti's are always crapping out on people I would rather only pay for one once. Hell, Autozone would probably take it back if antifreeze got on it. One thing to remember is that they don't come with a cap and rotor. I just bought a new one of the cap kits from Chromer for $100 and then I got to seal the unit up myself with some silicone for insurance.
So, I got a lifetime warranty opti for ~$230. Not a bad deal really.

Just go to the search forum and tpye in his name.....a million one of these pop up...
The high cost stems from the following scenario....
Case in point:
I work for TRW - Occupant Safety Systems as a Cost Accountant/GL Supervisor, part of my duty consists of costing parts.
Well as we all know, opti's are not used in current production vehicles anymore, so this part is now considered to what we call in TRW "past model service parts", like a seatbelt of anyother product this calls for low volume production, and because of this reason alone we do not employ full time employees specifically to build these parts.
So if GM, were to make an order for OPTI's (past model service part), we would in turn have to incur costs on the following.....
Set-Up Charge: costs that are incurred as we hire new people, set-up, and test machinery the new production lines will require. This would also cover re-training of direct labor personnel, and processing fees.
Material - since we will ask our suppliers to ship us low volumes of raw material, they would in turn hike up the cost of these materials.
Basically all of the above hikes up the cost of the past model service parts, trust the OE suppliers do not make money on this, it is actually more of a burden and a money maker, but a required deal as part of the contract. Old cars need parts replace you know, so who is going to make them.
We pass this cost to the customer.
Ok Bye!
