why don't people use header wrap to stop burning wires?

i always see posts about people burning their new plug wires on their headers, so why don't people wrap them? it seems like a simple solution but i am guessing there is a downside to it or else everyone would do it...please clue me in.

Because header wrap sucks.

It seals in moisture & rusts your headers.

Because:

retains dirt and oil making it a fire hazard

causes overheating of the metal in the pipes, making them brittle

voids most header warranties

is that true of ceramic coated headers as well, what about stainless steel headers...i really don't know anything about header wrap, that's why i'm asking

got ya, thanks!

Header wrap is effective in race conditions, but the extreme heat makes the metal brittle and the header will actually break down and a hold will blow out, like a large hole...lol
You can wrap the plug wires in header wrap :) I actually use a wrap found on old toyota camrys and such from the junk yard. It's a large wrap that encloses the air conditioning lines from the exhaust. I pull that off, cut in 4" lengths and slip them over the plug wires and boots. Never even worry about burning one :)

The fire hazard alone should be enough reason for anyone.

as everyone stated before aobut the coating and what-not. it is usually just as easy to take some time routeing them better. j/k.

Just route the wires over the top. The looms don't cost that much, and neither do the wires. Routing is the key.

I use header wrap and I love the stuff. There is a right way to put it on. Dont overlap it by much and dont wrap it tight.

My headers are uncoated stainless steel, so no rust. The holes in the Z28 hood are cut open (to let air out when at a light, not let air in) and some rain gets to the headers. Everytime I start it up after a rain my header wrap gets steam cleaned. I dont know if that really cleans them, but my engine is pretty clean/leak free, so the wrap never gets dirty anyways.

After 2 years there is no oil or debree in the wrap. It works better the ceramic coating and I like the way it looks.

To each his own I guess

oh, never wrap coated headers. That will over stress the metal.

Taylor makes a little sleeve you can slide over the plug and plug-boots. Thats what i have on 1 of the plug-boots on each side. I had the arcing going on so i bought 2 of them at $8.00 a piece and put them on and fixed it all up! :O)

That is what I did, it works well, and looks decent. I didnt wrap the plug wires, but I did wrap certian wires that run to other sensors that come close to my headers. Works like a dream. No burnt wires.

I use header wrap and a stapple or 2 on my problem plug wires. It works very well my plug wires are 9months old with no problem thus far.

I had a bad fire experience because of it. It likes to retain chemicals.

Stay away!!!!

Header WRAP is good stuff, just not on headers on a street car...and it looks as$...
