Why does my car eat alternators?

The car is basically a 93Z28 and I can't figure this one out. Thank god for lifetime warranties but damn I'm getting tired of swapping them out. This last one only made it about 7 weeks. I'm not having any electrical problems in the car that would lead me to a cause. I'm not even experiencing any battery drainage if the car sits for several days so I don't think there is a short. Right now I have the relocation bracket that moves it down where the AC was but the problem existed before I did that.

Anyone else suffer from this problem?

Advanced Auto right now....all Delcos. I've had em from other parts places also and they have all met with the same fate. I've disected a couple and found that the brushes are fine, it seems like the internal regulators may be getting toasted.

Do you have a bbk underdrive pulley if so you also need the alternator pulley as well. The alternators that you are buying are they rebuilt if so pay a little bit more for the new with the same war i work at autozone 5 years this is a common proublem with rebuilt alternators. If you have a sound system that when it hits you see your dash lights dim that is also a proublem. You need to have your system professional installed with caps a blocks. Jack Brown

Head unit is aftermarket but no amps or subs pulling alot of power.

I'm running stock pulleys.

Just finished installing a new one tonight so we'll see how long this one makes it. I give it 10 weeks......maybe 12.

forgot to mention that I also run an optima red top battery so there should be plenty of juice on tap. It's pretty amazing how far I can drive on battery when the alts crap out...so far I've made it over an hour and a half on the battery.

Re: Why does my car eat alternators?

that's not an option....I'll swap free ones all day long until I find the cause. Aren't new ones like $300+ ?

Re: Why does my car eat alternators?

Just a thought.... How hight does the voltage goes up after start up? In my car there is a little wire that connects to the alt. I think it controls the output voltage. I need to look a the schematic though.

I think your alts are crapping out of high temps from high loads. It would be a good idea to have someone measure the Amps being delivered from the Alt to the bat when you start the car.... Thats a good starting point.

Re: Why does my car eat alternators?

I had a similar thought last night but more along the line of somehow being able to put a meter in the car so I can see how many amps are pulled during different situations such as when I spray, run the bottle heater, turn on the fans, etc...

Anyone know if there is a way to install such a meter in the car?

Could be poor rebuilds.

Here is a link to new CS144 alternators.

Re: Why does my car eat alternators?

A bad tensioner can cause alternator problems. By causing a "jerky" motion. We summised that it is shock loading the alternator. We recommend that you change the belt and the tensioner at regular intervals.
