Why do some people insist on aftermarket heads?

This topic isn't for me to change my mind, because I already have my mind made up. The reason I question this is, everyone I tell I'm having my stock castings ported, for the amount of money I'm spending, I should just buy a set of heads. It really drives me crazy to have to try and explain this to people, but I think it's a better bang for the buck to ahve the stock heads done. Anyone had this problem?

Coming from someone who has a worked over set of AFR 220's on my car...I totally agree with you. Much more bang for the buck with a nice port job on a set of stock castings. The only reason to go aftermarket is if the stockers can't meet your performance goals. In the typical 355 or 383 LT1 with LT1 heads build, that number is around 430rwhp for most guys and while using the stock computer and ported LT1 intake. If you need more than that, you need to go to a bigger setup which will cost you more dollars per hp that you gain.

Most likely the people you are talking to believe you can bolt Gen1 heads to a Gen2(LT1) block. We all know this can be done.. its just really expensive and time consuming.

lol

it all depends on what ur goal is and who does ur heads. Porting heads isnt cheap but its still not as expensive as say AFRs.

If ur goal is to have a street/trip daily car with great power , porting ur heads is great

if u want to get the most power out of ur settup even being a daily driver , u should get aftermarket heads, a full ported LT1 head will never flow as good as some aftermarket heads.

It is true that u can get some heads for the price of ur port job , but if u really want to make tons of power "better" heads will cost more but be ur best choice in the long run
