Why do I smell coolant?
Why do I smell coolant?
If I run the heater there is a strong coolant smell and if the A/C is ran the coolant smell is still there but very light.
Also I notice at night sometimes my windshield fogs up right above the windshileld defrost
I checked the passenger side floor to see if there were any leaks thinking it might be the heater core and this is not it
2 weeks ago I added epoxy to the radiator from a pinhole leak right underneath the fill neck and now the coolant runs down the middle of the
radiator since this did not stop the leak...
Is it possible this is what is causing the smell? What else can I check for?
This leak is only a drip and not gushing out
Thanks in Advance!

Re: Why do I smell coolant?
The heater core could have a small leak, I would check for fluid on the passanger side of the interior right below the dash.
However if the leak is very small it might not be enough to detect. You need to visually inspect the heater core.
If I were you I'd replace the radiator with a new one, and inspect the heater core. If that is leaking as well you'd be wise to 1. block off the houses by routing the two hoses leading to the fire wall together or 2. replacing the heater core. The second option allows you to keep your heater.

Re: Why do I smell coolant?
So if the heater core is leaking it will only smell when the a/c or heater are on right?
The reason I ask is because when neither are turned on it does not smell and if the heater core is leaking and its located underneath the dash wouldnt it smell the whole time?

Re: Why do I smell coolant?
The heater core always has coolant running through it. There are two hoses going to your fire wall there is an inlet hose, and an outlet hose. Both hoses lead to your heater core.
You may only be able to smell it once air is moving through there due to the fact that it might be a small leak.
However I would first replace the radiator as that leak will surely lead to over heating.
I would associate the smell of coolant inside your vehicle with the heater core. You could remove the heater core and connect the two hoses going to the fire wall together using a kit from autozone for like 8 bucks. Or you could replace the heater core for 60 dollars. Either one of those should fix your problem. If in fact is is leaking you'll need to 1. replace it 2. keep thoses hoses connected together. A friend of mine also has a 94' and his was leaking a while back.

Re: Why do I smell coolant?
I seem to have developed the same symptoms once I installed my jet hot lt's. It generally only happens when the car gets warmer (i.e. rushour driving). Once the temp hits the 3/4 mark and starts to cool down (2nd fan kicks on), that's around when I start to smell the coolant. Its rather odd considering I don't lose any coolant. I heard it could be the lt's buring something like the ac or heater box.
