Whistling sound when I start up my car????

When I start up my car it sounds like my belt is slipping but it's not. I verified this by taking the belt off and starting up the car.
The sound would go away after a few minutes of driving.
When I step on the gas the sound would get louder.

Anyone ever have this problem before?
Any suggestion?

Thanks
Oliver

It's coming from the front near the throttle body I think.

Would a loose pulley make that kind of noise?

My car makes a whistling noise and its the alternator going out..... My advice is to pinpoint it. Open the hood and modulate the throttle from under the hood to fine tune the source of the noise....

Sounds like a bad bearing. Probably in the alternator. :)

valter 05-14-2004 09:29 AM

I think bad bearing on some pulley or in alternator. Try spraying some belt dressing, that can probably help figure it out.

teke184 05-14-2004 09:58 AM

could be a bad idler pully on the main serp belt.

i'd put money on a bad bearing in the alt though

hawk232 05-14-2004 11:00 AM

the whistle you are hearing is coming from the supercharger.... DUH

seriously though, im with everyone else, bad alt bearing, btw it couldnt be the idler pully bearing because he pulled the belt off

Hood_Lum 05-17-2004 01:51 AM

Since I pulled the belt off the alt isn't moving either, right?
So does that mean it's not bad bearings on the alt?

I would check your intake manifold...Mine started "whistling" and it was a leak in the back of the intake manifold....which is very common for LT1's....

A whistling you say? Like air moving perhaps? But only for a couple of minutes after starting?

My vote goes towards the AIR pump. It pushes air into the manifolds for about 2 minutes at startup, then shuts off. It's the pump located towards the driverside of the optispark.

If it's only at startup, and then only for a couple of minutes I'd think it would have to do with the AIR system somehow, as this system only runs at startup and then only for a couple of minutes.

Wow im surprised no one thought of the air pump! It sounds like a lil electric motor, thats cause thats what it is. IT will make a whistling sound for a minute or two on a cold motor or shorter on a warmed up motor. When the sound goes away does it just kinda slowly die off? If it is thats whats going on, its normal

If you really wanna know for sure unplug the wires on it and see what happens. its on the front of the motor towards the drivers side, black round box lookin thing, itll have 2 black rubber hoses running in and out of it.

It is amost certainly the Air Injection Reaction Pump. My 96 does the same thing. As far as I know the noise when cold is normal. Mine has been whining when cold for 35,000 miles, so it must be. I haven't had any problems. Good Luck! :thumb:
