where and how to check for vacuum leaks?

The vacuum tester can apply vacuum to a line and you can tell whether it holds vacuum.

Where could one get replacement hoses? All my connections at the throttle body and a couple of others are ripped etc. I read in my Haynes manual that you have to use hoses with certain vacuum characteristics, I don't remember what they were however.

Your local auto chain store, Sears, Harbor Freight, etc. A "Mighty Vac" brand is normally a good one. It is just a small hand operated vacuum pump with a gauge on it.

Take the hose(s) with you to the auto store. That way you will get the right size. Any that carry fuel or oil vapors need to be "emissions" hoses, so they hold up.
