Unhappy when your OPTI goes, does it.........

Does the car just die or does it run bad for a while?

Reason I'm asking is because I was driving the car today coming home from work and drove it at WOT and bam! the car just died, in a flash!

I'm gonna get it towed to the house, I hope I can find someone with an OBD1 scanner or buy one cheap.

Am I right to think it's the Opti since this happened so quick and sudden with no previous warning signs???

Please and THANKS

Martin

my friends 94 z28 did that same thing. we were on the interstate trying to get an eagle talon to race, and finally, he did, and my friend went WOT and BAM, it just died....we were going downhill and so we coasted off the interstate......

let it rest for a while and it started back up and was running really really crappy. it turned out to be the coil and coil wire needed replaced.

btw, his car has 190,000 miles. original opti.

opti can do it but so can other things. ICM, COIL. Wire going to coil from opti. Corrosion on opti electrical harness also.

Use a multimeter on the coil and check for 5.25 ohms across each terminal. 8.25 something if its a 93-95 coil. Check resistance across opti to coil wire also.

thanks, that would be great if it was only the coil. That's where I'll start.

Am I wrong to think it's ignition related since it died so quickly?

I'm not a mechanic but try to fix as much as I can.

What you described is exactly how my Opti failed the first time except I also got a loud backfire when it died at 70 miles per hour on the expressway.

Since then it has failed in more subtle ways but as mentioned above, it might not be the Opti either. I would expect a code if it is the Opti.

Actualy, there WILL be a code since the engine light came on. I forgot to mention that.

If it makes any difference, the car hadn't reached normal operating temperature when this happened which is probable 2 minutes after I started the car.

I have a '93 Z28 with 132,000 miles on the odo. At 120,000 my computer died when I went WOT coming out of a turn...the RPMs were climbing and I was all like "hell yeah!" and then it all died and I saw every needle on my gauge cluster fall to zero...

I don't know if the computer dies if a code would still be thrown and you would see the SES light come on or not(seeing as the computer dies) but that might be your problem...

Good luck.

Mine did the "I was going WOT, loud back fire, cut off" thing like a day or two ago, lots of new ignition parts are on the way, we'll see how it goes

Mine had horrible misfire all day at low RPMs one day, then I came to a stop and it died. Started it up and gave it gas and it chugged till it died again. Changed the opti and all was well. 124k on that opti.

My car was getting sluggish and would backfire occasionally. Then the trq converter broke (long story) so while it was in for repair I removed the cat, when I got it back..it ran like crap... barely tolerable.. then it just died.

Melted opti.

Hmmm, just did shoebox's coil test..only got 500ohms of resistance (MSD coil), should be like 10x that...guess its time for a new coil, along with this new opti, wires and plugs...$$$$

Make sure you were on the correct scale on your meter.
