Kind of a broad question to be honest. If you still want the thing to be driveable then that changes the answers to your question. If you want to make good power and stay driveable I'd go with something in the high 220's for duration or low 230's. Lift being whatever your valvetrain is made to handle safely, and lobe seperation pretty much whatever you want. Wider for driveability and less lope or tighter for a more choppy idle but less driveability. Are you looking for a shelf cam or are you interested in doing a custom cam? Lloyd Elliott can hook you up with a good custom cam for $300 shipped to your door and you can literately tell him what exactly you're looking for and he'll give you ideas. Plus he's always willing to help. Advanced induction can do the same thing but their cams are a little more expensive but well worth it as well. Hope this helps at least a little.

sounds good, off the shelf is probably going to be my cheapest route so i was going to go that way for now. i am willing to upgrade valve springs for the cam. i do want the driveability but also want some lopey idle.

I like the Isky grinds for an off-the-shelf grind.

Look at the RR211272-282 - nice cam that is easy on parts and makes nice power. I ran the larger version RR211282-294 for a while and was happy with it. On the unworked heads, the smaller grind will really work better IMO. Run 1.6 RR with it though.

If you really think about it it's not that much more for a custom cam. Comps shelf cams range from like $250-$280 plus shipping. Lloyd can make a cam for your specific application for exactly what you want for $300 shipped. Plus the lobes are shaped a little different so the timing events may be the same but they'll still make more power than a shelf cam for a few extra bucks. Just something to look into.

no mention of the weight, gear, stall, shift RPM, drivability, emissions, etc, etc, but a cam in the mid 220's on duration (GM 846, Comp CC 503, etc,) will get you a descent gain in HP while being very drivable and still passing emissions (if needed).

Any larger and you will sacrifice some low end power making gear and stall selection alot more important.
