i hear that they break all the time! what is the purpose of it? if i get an oem replacement one will it break when i install my cc 305 and hp oil pump?
Usually it's the plastic coupler on the drive shaft that breaks, not so much the gear (although some people have reported them breaking/stripping). For what it's worth, I'm using my OEM stock drive on my 7000 RPM 383 that made 455whp/445tq on the dyno today (with a high-volume high-pressure pump, thread below).
The gear on the back of the cam spins the stub drive which engages the oil pump drive shaft which turns the oil pump.

Flow Chevrolet, in Winston Salem NC, runs that site. Just call the Flow Chevy parts department and ask them for the number of internet sales. That should get you somebody(it did me). I have actually driven over there to pickup some of my parts I ordered from them(10 miles from my house).
