went to dragstrip today and bad things happened need ideas!!!!!!!

ok i went to the dragstrip today and things weren't good from the very first run. my mods are in sig. my first runs were right around 13.8 at 100mph. thats what my car was runing last year stock. ok so when i was going down the strip when the rpm got over 5600 or so it would sputter. my fuel pressure was fine, oil was fine and temp was fine. i noticed that the roller rockers where pretty noisy louder than what they should be. so i was on my way home and i was in 5th gear at around 1500 rpm and when i floored it the car like poped through the exhaust then took off. when we got back to my house i had the car sitting there idleing and ever 15sec or so the was a little pops. so i was coming to the conclusion that that roller rockers are not adjusted right and noisy as hell witch is throwing my timing way off which makes my car run like dog crap. all the other mods that i put on was done earlier and the car has been runing fine untill this morning and i only got about 300 miles on the car sinjce the roller rockers have been put on. so what your thoughts sound like thats what it is or not.

Do you still have factory programming? Sounds like your running too rich, especially at WOT. Or your getting false knock from your lifters, causing the timing to be pulled down.

yes i still have the stock programming. i have drove the car for a week or so and everythinga has been fine sprayed n2o 5 or 6 times everything was great. then today the car starts acting up. and the rocker arms seem the be out of adjustment cause there alot louder then they should be. so would retarding the timing and out of adjustment roller rockers cause my car to act like that.

I'm not an expert, but there's two things that you need to address. First thing is your going to be running rich, stock programming is set rich, especially at WOT. That could contibute to the popping sound you have in your exhaust. If you don't or can't scan your car and do your own programming, have Bryan at pcmforless.com do it for you. He does a good job. Second, if your lifters are noisy, your knock sensor will be picking up false knock and retard your timing making your car seem ******* or falling on it's face at high rpm's. You need to fix the lifters, then get a LT4 knock module to help eliminate some of the noise being pickuped by the knock sensor. Bryan can install a LT4 knock module also when he does your progamming. You can get all this for around $130 or so and pickup 20 hp or in your case help solve your problem. There are also ways to densensitize the knock module.

I have a '93 Formula w/A4 that runs about the same times as yours. I noticed that when I shift a little late (above 5600) my car sputters too, but I thought it was the factory rev limiter kicking in. I never had the backfire though. I've seen 4th gen cars at the track with very severe backfiring, but always summed it up as bad programming, or too much advance.

it's not hitting the rev limtiter cause i have took it up to 6000 just a couple of days a go and everything was fine. i think the roller rockers are way out of adjustment , there alot noisier than should be which is throwing my timing off.

Not for nothing, but now that I think of it, all the 4th gen car I've seen that have severe backfiring at the dragstrip, have a nitrous system. Just for grins, maybe unhook your window switch and see what happens. I will say one thing, I've seen some pretty stupid people wring they're car out with severe backfiring, and I don't ever remember any of them blowing an engine. I gues they were lucky.
