Water pump drive shaft
'95 Z28
How does one remove the drive gear assy for the water pump that engages the cam gear? There is a bearing that appears to be pressed into the block and the shaft of the gear assy appears to be pressed into the bearing. When I removed my assy I drove the shaft out of the bearing leaving the bearing in the block. When an assy I purchased arrived it came complete with the bearing on the shaft. With the assy in place there's no way that I can see to use a bearing press or puller. Would one drive the bearing out from the back using a socket or something of proper size if so how does one install the assy. |
Re: Water pump drive shaft
The bearing isn't pressed into the block, it's retained by a plate with two torx head bolts.

I took the two bolts out and the plate. But the parts didn't just slip out. I'll try again to remove the bearing from the block.

Re: Water pump drive shaft
My bearing is either stuck or pressed in. I can't budge it with my bare hands.

Re: Water pump drive shaft
It is a very tight non press fit. You should be able to tap it out with a hammer and drift...

Re: Water pump drive shaft
It'll come out, just pry gently on the flange that the torx go in...gently

Re: Water pump drive shaft
I already had the shaft out of the bearing leaving the bearing in the block. I decided to "press" the bearing out by using a 6" C-clamp and a couple of sockets.
The bearing took some pressure to break free but then it popped and slipped out with no problem. Just offering for future reference for others. |
Re: Water pump drive shaft
I was able to install the new used drive shaft by tightening the hold down bolts alternating between the two.
BTW, I tried three Chevy dealerships (2 local and GMPARTSDIRECT.COM) and no one had the driveshaft or could find a dealer they could get one from also not available from other aftermarket sources. Bought two off eBay and installed the best one. |
