UD Pullies worth it when?

I have a brand new valvetrain, getting long tubes and x pipe down in about 1 1/2 months... is it worth it to change my ud pullies for a few extra ponies? Or not worth it? I am putting an amp in my car, but just one for the interiors (Bigger one then stock)

Through my research its only worth getting ASP crank replacement pulleys, but everyone who has them said if your running alot of aftermarket stereo stuff to invest the money elsewhere. I think there were a few recent threads on it, try looking those up too. I have one sitting here and I'll have it on soon and let you know.

One option if you have more electrical requirments is to do an under drive/ over drive combo. Under drive on the crank, and an over drive on the alt. This will bring your alt. back up closer to normal speed. Yeah, it wont give you AS much power, but hey, that stereo's gotta sound good, right? Lol. You will still get gains from slowing down the A/C pully, power steering pump, uhhh... im having a brain fart... thats all thats on the serp, right? Oh boy, I need sleep.....

I have the asp replacement and I feel it was worth the money. I used the piggy back one and got vibration. I have none with the asp. I have a pretty big stereo system in my car and don't have any charging problems. My amps are one Zapco Ref 350.2 for highs and Zapco 500M for subs. That's 850 watts rms with no issues. I had cahrging problems with every automatic car I have ever put pulleys on because the idle is lower with an auto. The needle moves at night with all accesories, lights and fans but not into the red. Just pulses to the beat.

You might have the larger alt. I know some of them Z's came with them. My last one did, but I havnt checked on my new car. You can check the RPO codes inside the glove box to see which alt. you have. Search RPO codes for gm online and match up your code.

I thought they all came with 140 amp alternators.

for the money/time investment it's not worth it. i'd only use it for drag racing applications. you might get 20 hp out of it and you'll spend hours changing them out. especially the crank pully, it's a pain.

Re: UD Pullies worth it when?

I never had much of a problem taking off my crank pulley There are lots of mods much harder to install with the same HP benefits. 1.6 RR's for instance, cost 3 times as much and much harder to install for about the same gain. I think its a easy cheap mod.

I tried looking for the longest time, but does anyone know if that Hypertech is a piggy back or replacement? If its a piggy back I bet the ASP will perform even better.

Re: UD Pullies worth it when?

hypertech is a piggy back thus adding weight to the rotating assembly. The asp piece is smaller and lighter than factory balancer it replaces . Removing weight and underdriving I would bet would gain higher than 1 horsepower.

I think the Hypertech is the March pulley and they are the piggy back design. I have never seen the ASP. It might be better with less weight but the March model doesn't weigh that much. I have had my March pulley on for 7 years w/o any problems.

The ASP pulley I was talking about replaces you stock one so its saving alot of weight and could also be higher underdrive than march or hypertech. I think youll see better gains with an ASP one. I'll let you guys know what I gain from mine when I get it on.
