Tire Size

I just wanna know if a 315 Nitto 555 drag radial is gonna be too big for my 9" SS Wheels??? I'm rollin' 285 now with no prob. and I'm not scared to take the hammer out to fix rubs! SO... ??? Are they gonna fit??

I've wondered as well, as I have the 17x9 rims that came with my car's WS6 package. When I did a search, the general concensus was that is was physically possible to mount the tire, but that the rim was too narrow to do it right. I would like to see some pics if someone has done it anyway though.

When you put a big tire on, the rim width should be about the same size as the tread width, otherwise you're not getting full force down on the total tread width since the narrower rim is pulling up on the outer edges of the tread.

I know it's not optimal to run a tire that is much bigger than the rim as far as traction goes BUT I just can't run the same size tires all the way around.... it looks bad in my opinion.... for my car at least.... I kinda figured it would fit the rim cusz on of my biddies runs a 275 on a 7.5" rim.... I would go with a 285 on the back But I don't see a 285 nitto d-radial..... the next size is the 315 and the two tires are only 30mm diff in size... which is just a small fraction over an inch total... like 1/2 an inch on each side.... I think I might just give it a shot... never know for sure unless you try!!

I've run both 275s and 315s (BFG drs, but same specs should apply) BFG recommends a 10-12" wheel for the 315s...I was told by tech at Tire Rack that 10" was absolute min width for 315s..the sides will buldge and you wont get full benefit of wider tread. For comparison purposes I borrowed an 11" ZR1 wheel and hit the track...no difference in 60', ET or trap speed....all things being equal I stayed with 275...lighter and cheaper...

The BFG recommended wheel width for the 315/35-17 Comp T/A Drag Radial, at least as shown in the Tire Rack "specs", is 11" -12".

The Nitto home page shows the "approved" wheel width for their 315/35-17 555R Drag Radial as 10.5" - 12".

This picture might help... on the left a 315 BFG DR on an 11" wide rim, on the right, a 275 GS-C on a 9.5" wide rim.....

think about it :)
