Timing gears

Anyone have any opinions about them? If anyone has heard the noisy versions, do they sound good? Probably going to be doing the LE2 kit and was thinking about goin with gears and not a chain. How much more do they weigh compared to a chain and the spockets? Would it be better to just go with a chain, and if so, where should I get a good one for the LE2 kit.

Gear drives work well but they're not all created equal.

I personally do not care for the dual idlers like Pete Jackson etc., as they are "noisier" and cost a little more hp than a single idler unit. I have used and would recommend the Wesmar style drives like those Milodon makes.

As for noise... the single idlers are less noisy but the noise of a Pete Jackson "noisy" is kind of like listening to the whine of a roots style supercharger.

Now, all that said... Milodon does make an 86-up gear drive, but I have no IDEA what's actually involved in making it work on an LT1. So, you'd likely be on your own if you decide to go that route.

Otherwise, I'd either go to an electric water pump and a Cloyes hex-a-just or Rollmaster...... or go with the LT4 chain and/or your mechanical water pump.

Thanks for the info. I'll prolly just go with the LT4 chain. Keep it simple.

Gear drives will trigger your knock sensor (false knock) and pull timing.

Good to know.

Yep, you would want to disable the knock sensor... same as if you were going to a solid roller cam.
