Timing chain
Ok. I got ym crank hub off and getting ready to replace the seals. I am lookng at my timing chain and it has a good bit of give and slack in it. Is this normal or time to replace it while I am in there? Its a 95 LT1 with 65,000 odd miles on it.
Thanks. |
Replace the sucker. You've got a variety of chains/gears available and Cloyes is fine. Some like the LT4 setup, other double roller set ups and etc, but if you are not pushing for 500RWHP the standard Cloyes will do'ya.
You'll notice some seat of the pants improvement with the timing chain replacement, and your engine will kick over much quicker. Look at it like a very loose bike chain, tighten it up and it has better pedal response. |
In order to use the Cloyes (3145 anyway), you'll have to switch to an electric water pump.
As for whether it's normal for the stock chain to go slack, from what I've seen, it is. It doesn't take very long either, a buddy of mine had to tear down his engine after a rebuild he did 5k miles prior. He had a stock replacement set and sure enough, it was just as slack as mine when I had 103k miles. |
So would a LT4 timing chain setup be better? I am not pushing 500 rwhp. I am pretty much stock with headers and some minor things nothing major like juice or cam.

Might check out the Lunati timing set or comp cams set. Either of those are better than the stock chain.

Where do I get a timing chain set from Lunati?

Summit or Jegs
