Cleaning Tops of Pistons

Hey guys/gals, I am repairing a blown head gasket and I wanted to know if I needed to clean the tops of the pistons? Can I just clean the block and put everything back together? Do I need to do anything special to the cylinder walls besides put a light coat of oil on them so they don't rust? I don't want to rotate the engine if I don't have to. I have a shop vac to vacuum the debris out of the cylinders as I clean.

Thanks,
Sean

as long as there isn't massive amounts of carbon deposits in the valve reliefs on the pistons cleaning them will just be a waste of time, if they are just black and no real deposits, you wont be cleaning anything off that wont be back in less than a 1000 miles
