They sent me the wrong Gears

I got my 4.10s go to put them in and my dad says there for the wrong carrier. How can i tell if they gave me a set for a 2.73 carrier. My car had 3.23 from the factory. All though the ring rears are the same size and bolt pattern

my dad said the ring gear is to far from the pinnion. It needs to go to the right. He said sometime they give u like a spcaer to move the ring gear over a lil

You should have also bought an installation kit with your gears. Included in that are the spacers needed. Anytime you change gears like that you'll have to make some minor adjustments with the spacers/shims that come with the kit. Are you under the impression you shouldn't need to make any adjustments at all?

yes i also bought an instal kit. My dad has set up many gears in the cars i have. As i said he had it all setup and its no going far enought to mesh with the pinion. He thinks i have the wrong carrier. how can i tell if the carrier and gears are right

The question here is how far off is it? Thousandths? or a more substantial amount?I don't know the difference in the thickness between the 2 carriers, but it's substantial [1/4"? 1'2"?]
If it's the former [thousandths] you need the shims Brent mentions above..
If it's the latter, then you do have the wrong gear, a 3 series carrier takes different thickness gears than a 2 series carrier..
Yes, there is a ring gear 'spacer' you can buy..
Or you can get a gear set for series 2 carrier which has a thicker ring gear which is specially made to take up the difference..
Or you can get a new series 3 carrier..

Just saw your post above.. sounds to me like you have the wrong set..[see above] since the gear isn't even meshing...

its like a 1/4 in off. My car had 3.23 in it and these gears are for a series 3 carrier. what carrier is in my car and how can u tell

1984camaroz28 Apr 4, 2004 04:43 PM

the ring gears are the same thickness that came outa the car. the pinions are alot diff

also where could i buy one of theoes spacers

"White Knight" Apr 4, 2004 04:53 PM

sounds like they sent you gears for the wrong carrier:mad: Or they mixed up the pionons.

1984camaroz28 Apr 4, 2004 04:54 PM

how can i tell what carrier there for

1984camaroz28 Apr 4, 2004 05:29 PM

will this work

1984camaroz28 Apr 4, 2004 05:56 PM

ok i just found out the gear i took out of the car where 2.73s but the car had 1st gear on the shifter. So now i got gears for a 3.23 and higher carrier. what can i do. can i use a spacer or buy a new unit

Mtrhds94Z Apr 4, 2004 06:56 PM

OK it seems that you have a 2 series carrier [stock 2.73's] then..[confusing, yes, as you have the 1st gear option on the shift selector.. maybe someone changed that?]
Like I said above, the options are:
1]Spacer for the ring gear
2]Getting the 'right' thicker ring gear set for a 2 series carrier.
3]Getting a 3 series carrier, and using the gears you have.
And yes, that ebay spacer appears to be correct..
