Which of these cams would you guys pick? Poll
Which of these cams would you guys pick? Poll
Which of the 3 cams below would best suite my needs?
I want a cam that will:
Have me shifting at under 6300RPM's
Have a nice lopey idle.
Work well with stock LT1 heads.
Work with Comp 918's and Pro Mags 1.6's
Also, not required, but it would be nice if these would pass a sniffer test
Here is what I was looking at:
LT4 Hot Cam (218*/228*) .525/.525
CC502 (218*/224*) .495/.503
CC305 (220*/230*) .510/.510
CC503 (224*/230*) .503/.510
I was thinking since I plan to spray a small(VERY) wet shot on it, either 50 or 75, that something with a little longer intake duration would be better for me. So really I think a 305 or a 503 would be the best?
Anyone know if they would pass emissions with either of those?
Any other cams out there that are similar to these that would fit what I want?
This is on stock, unported, LT1 heads.
Also, you think the stock lifters would be ok on these? I figured they would, since the stockers are a god design. Plus mine only have 16,000 origional miles on em so ... They are barely broke in.
I DEFINATLY do NOT want to have to spin it past 6200-6300 RPM's. I know the Hot Cam can spin that high, but that was what I've seen on ported heads.
Will these cams definatly keep me under 6200-6300RPM's for good shift points on stock unported LT1
heads?
Any of these would lope pretty good too huh?

I wouldnt count out the GM 846: 220/230 .509/.529 112 LSA I'd skip the CC502 personally. Also when your rating lifts you have the rest rated a 1.5 when the Hotcam is rated at 1.6. Its lift is actually .492 or something with 1.5's and .525 with 1.6's.
I think with the N2O your going to want more exhaust duration relative to the intake.
Any of those will meet your criteria, although to start seperating them you need to look and lobe designs and how they wear on the valvetrain. Obviously a N2O cam will benefit you the most, but these arent bad choices. Remember that N2O also likes a wider LSA.
Idle wise the 112's will idle more lopey than the 114LSA's. I have heard Hotcams and CC305's in person and the Hotcam loped a bit more.
Personally I'd put them in this order: GM846, CC305, Hotcam, CC503

Re: Which of these cams would you guys pick? Poll
I believe there is a higher lift version of the 224/230 out there that still keeps it under .600 with 1.6 rockers. I would go with that. Either way I would go with the 224/230
Re: Which of these cams would you guys pick? Poll
When you ranked them in the order you would choose them, why did you put the CC503 AFTER the hotcam? It doesnt match what your saying. For my set up I need a longer exhaust duration than intake, to compliment the N20. The Hot Cam is 218/228, this is 224/230. In addition, the intake duration is 6* longer, which cant hurt in making more power. Ideall for N20, a longer LSA is better. The CC503 has a wider LSA at 114 versus the hot cams 112. And lastly, it has a little more over all lift, which would help out since this is on stock unported heads. It will help make up for the lack of flow from no port work. From what I have read, researched and seen, the CC503 would be much better for what I am looking for than the Hot Cam.
Also, the GM 846, is the same duration as the CC503, but less lift (If those numbers are 1.6, and all the CC #'s I posted were 1.5's) which isnt helping me out on stock heads. And it is a tighter LSA at 112 versus 114.
From what you have said, and I have read, I would think they would be more in the order of :
CC503, GM 846, CC305, LT4 HC, CC502.
I was thinking of completely ruling out the CC502, as it would really not be worth doing when there are so many better choices.
The LT4 HC is too tight of a LSA, and has a little bit less overall intake and exhaust duration. It would make less overall power, and likely be just as "peaky" as a longer duration cam. The CC305 has nice lift and nice duration, but the CC503 has pretty much the same lift, a tad longer duration. Also, Im not sure what the LSA is on the CC305, but at any rate, as of right now the two best looking cams would be a CC503 or a GM 846 for what I need. Wider LSA, longer duration, and a proportionally longer exhaust than intake. I am not really sure though what the ramp profiles are like comparing the 846 and the 503 ? But the 503 has better LSA for my application (114 versus 112) and has a tad bit more lift if those numbers you posted are 1.6 (Since GM rates their stuff at 1.6 usually)

I voted other also...here's my explanation why.....Shelf cams are alright for if you want to order it and have it at your doorstep in two days......but I would never recomend (or want) anything other than a custom grind from a proven reputable cam guy like Bret(stroker ace) Ect........this way you can get exactly what your looking for......anything less than a custom grind, is just a compromise one way or another..........
Re: Which of these cams would you guys pick? Poll
I'd go with either the CC305 or the hotcam ,of those listed, simply because they are proven sniffer passers. I am not impressed by anything I've seen out of the 224/230, its almost identical to the 305, but with the lobes shifted slightly. It doesnt perform heads and shoulders over the 305.

I guess 12.2 @ 109 with a 10:1 A/F ratio is also crappy too huh
