Is there a way to check timing?
Heres the deal. I put an LT1 in my car (87 IROC) and I cant get the thing to run right. It ran fine before being pulled from it's donor, and while I hade it out, I replaced the OPTI and plugs wires, water pump, the usual stuff. But it seems now that my timing is way off. The car cranks starts and runs like crap for a few seconds, and then sputters to it's death. I have checked the firing order at least 5 times, it's all correct. I have checked my wiring and it appears to be right. I have tried to find any possible grounds that may not be grounded but I think I have them all(how many are there btw). I'm very desperate for answers, I miss my car alot! Please help in anyway you can. Thank you.

Re: Is there a way to check timing?
if its an early style opti, its pretty easy to put on wrong and not really know it. If its a later style, its a lot harder. but eather way, thats probably your problem. I installed an opti wrong once a while back and it had the exact same symptoms.

Yeah, that's what I thought. All of them are keyed and would be close to impossible to install it wrong.

Re: Is there a way to check timing?
Have you verified other contributors like fuel pressure, hot spark, fouled plugs, etc?

Re: Is there a way to check timing?
what year motor is it? did you use the factory wiring harness?
|
Re: Is there a way to check timing?
It's out of a 94 Z28, and yes I used the factory 94 harness. I bought the Opti Unit from O'rielly's and I bought the MSD cap and rotor.

Re: Is there a way to check timing?
you are using a mass air flow sensor correct?
what did you hook the computer power wire to? make sure its getting power all the time when the ignition is on. |
Re: Is there a way to check timing?
There are two power wires going to the ECM and both are hot in start and run. Yeah, I also purchased a new MAF from O'rielly's. Everything is hooke up right as far as I know, but if you guys have any suggestions, Im open to them all.

check the opti again, what do you have to lose? its easier than you would think to screw it up.

CHECK YOUR COMPUTER!
you may need to reflash it, I had this same problem about a year ago... the computer had kicked the bucket on mine car would start, run for a few seconds, then sputter out and die possibly shorted it out during engine swap |
