Testing the alternator

Could someone tell me how to test the alternator, aside from taking it to autozone? I was driving home last night and as I was sitting at a light, the headlights were dimming quite a bit, kinda pulsating.

Thanks

I do it the redneck way. i start the car and unhook the ground from the battery. if it dies it's the alt. if it doesn't it's the battery.
I bet i'm the only one who does it that way. Old habit i guess.

the hillbilly way works pretty good. it sounds like an altenator to me. be sure to check your battery terminals(make smooth) and check that u have a good ground and that the battery terminals are tight.hope this helps
