Angry Temp Gauge Not Working

Okay so the temp gauge has been on the fritz for a while now.. sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, sometimes the needle just kinda dances around like the connection is shorting out. Now it has stopped working completely. It seems to me that all this started happening after I bought a new block coolant temp sensor after I broke the other during the long tube install (the sensor on the driver's side of the block right above the spark plugs). Is that sensor the one that controls the temp gauge in the cluster? So, any opinions on how I can check to see what's going on? I dunno if it's a bad connection somewhere or if it's just the sensor screwing with me. So is there some way I could test either the sensor or the wires with a voltmeter or something? I'd rather not go through the hassle of installing a new sensor to find out that the wires are the problem. Oh, and no the wires aren't touching the headers.

Thanks for the help,

Test help. Try jiggling the wire around while observing the meter to check for poor continuity within the wire.

that is the sensor that controls the temp guage. make sure the connection is tight. put some dielectric grease in the harness.
