Supercharger
I have a 97z that's pretty much all stock. I was thinking about putting a Vortech into it. Any pros or cons, or concerns I should have? I would like to keep my original hood as well, so I'd rather not have a scoop on it, if it can fit.
I live in Virginia Beach now and I'm looking for a good performance shop that's in the area....if any of you all know of one that you trust, please let me know. Thanks! |
Before you go putting a supercharger on your car, you should at least have a nice free-flowing exhaust. Headers and a cat-back are an absolute must. Since you will be on a stock bottom end, boost will be limited to 6 pounds (safely) intercooled.
IMO, for the cost, you'll get MUCH more HP per dollar if you pick up all the bolt-ons and a heads/cam package as opposed to just blindly throwing a supercharger on a stock engine. Your rotating assembly will like you much better. |

Thanks! Sound advice I was looking for. I have a magnaflow cat back and K&N, rest is stock. Where would you go next?

the most important thing though is that you have your car in proper running condition first, meaning a tune up with plugs, wires, cap and rotor, fuel filter, clean air filter. those things are so often overlooked |
Assuming your budget is the cost of a supercharger kit ($5k), I would do the bolt-ons first (headers, tune, gears, converter if you're an auto, etc.), then put the rest towards a heads/cam kit (either AI or LE).
I should note that if you are planning on porting the heads, the CC304, 305 and 503 would be a waste. |
I agree with all post, get it in perfect running shape, headers first, then put a cam, with roller rockers with tune. since you have to pull the rockers to put a cam in if your having a shop do it you won't pay double labor. put the blower on and get ready for a rebuild

My budget is around 5000.

This site will be a good choice if you go with heads and cam http://www.elliottsportworks.com/lt1.html. You will need all supporting mods and a tune.
|
your not even in the ballpark of a head cam swap with 5k and someone else doing the work
start at the beginning and work your way up |

Cam and headers sound like a good idea. Will cams give that good throaty sound?

Looked at a lot of them...that's what's making me wanna upgrade. With a 5k budget, where would you guys start? Switch to 4.11's? What kinda camshaft should I order? Headers? Please shoot me some brands/models. Keep in mind I'm gonna pay a dude to do the work. Thanks again! I'll upload some pics of my car too.
4.10 or 4.11 if your an m6, if auto id go 3.73. What kinda camshaft, good question you will get 500 different answers if you go with a HEad/cam package, then your cam will come speced to your heads. Headers.... loads of options Long tubes! (unless emissions matter) PaceSetter, cheap and effective Stainless steel headers (kooks, LPP) expensive, high quality never rust Loads of other brands. Gonna cost you a ton if someone else is being paid for all of this, you should find a buddy who knows his stuff (who REALLY knows his stuff) and learn from this. |
