Strange oil leak location. have some quesions
Strange oil leak location. have some quesions
Ive had my LT1 for a couple months now. Ive been noticing an oil leak. It only leaks while the car is running. Leaks alot! So today I jacked it up, cleaned everything around the oil leak, turned it on and crawled under. The oil is coming from just above the thing the oil filter screws into. On the side closest to the transmission, just above the lip for the oil pan. Can I remove the thing the oil filter screws into from the block? Is there a gasket between that thing and block?
Re: Strange oil leak location. have some quesions
ok,so after some research i found out its the oil filter adapter. But, at the auto parts store they only had the inside piece. I need the whole piece that the adapter goes into and the oil cooler lines screw into. The auto parts store was no help in naming or finding this piece. Anybody know what its called? Its number 141 on shbox's oil cooler diagram labeled oil cooler. But, that didnt pop up at the store.

Re: Strange oil leak location. have some quesions
It would be nice if you would provide some car info, so people know what you are working on (not just an LT1).
The part is called the oil cooler (like shown on the diagram). You may only need a gasket, unless the part itself is broken. Only the 95 version is still available from GM and is very expensive. However, a lot of people delete the oil cooler because of its dubious worth and tendency to clog or leak coolant into the oil. GM even dropped it as an option after the 95 model year.

Shoebox, thanks again for all the info. That explains why the parts store had nothing! I was used to oil coolers looking like a mini radiator. So this was new to me. And, yea my gasket is all cracked up. But sadly, after some investigative work I'm going to need more than a gasket.
Re: Strange oil leak location. have some quesions
You can delete the whole thing and use a normal SBC spin on filter adapter. Run a hose from the radiator to the water pump (where you took off the coolant lines to the oil cooler-that is called a bypass hose and is present on f-body cars without a cooler).
