Storing for winter.
Storing for winter.
The great time of of the year is here again. Time to put up storage, I usually just leave everything hooked up but someone told e to disconnect the negative battery cable.
Should I disconnect the negative cable?
Or is it the positive?
Will this effect the computer in the car?
Thanks all!

Re: Storing for winter.
I usually just remove the battery altogether and put it up on wooden blocks.
I guess you could just leave it in the car and disconnect one of the terminals it shouldn't be a problem.
BTW I see you're a penguins fan. I remember those great years... back 2 back cups

Re: Storing for winter.
Thanks, so you have no problems with the computer when you re-hook the battery?
Don't you start your car though out the months to get the fluids running though the engine?
Yeah the Penguins were a great team in the early 90's, I hope that the NHL doesn't fold withthe lockout they have a decent young team to build on once again.

Re: Storing for winter.
No I just put her away and start her up 6 months later.
There's some people that will argue that you should start the car every few weeks, but others say that that isn't very good for the car since after a few weeks of sitting there is not as much oil to lube on start up and so you're going to start the car "dry". Supposedly this is when most of the engine wear occurs.

Re: Storing for winter.
I usually store my car by adding some fuel stabilizer in the fuel tank, check to make sure the coolant is ok. I don't disconnect the battery since there isn't really a drain on the battery (alarm, etc). I wouldn't be too worried about your battery since I've never had any problems. I take the car out for a drive on nice clean and clear winter days, about once every month.
Man don't put the car away yet, you've got another month.

Re: Storing for winter.
Dont start your car until spring. Also disconnect the red terminal on the battery. It doesn't take too long and it makes sense. Technically fuel stabilizer might help but it's probably a waste of money. Maybe if a car was going to sit for longer........
Re: Storing for winter.
The insurance wants me to drop the insurance to fire and theft for 6 months. So no driving till at least April.
I do put the fuel stabilizer in the tank, but this will be the first year that I'll pull the battery and not start it for the 6 months.

If you do some reading about batteries you will learn that batteries will loose their charge even if nothing is hooked up to them. The internal plates will also start to get a little corrosion on them which will build up internal resistance. The battery may show 12 volts in 6 months, but it may not have the amps needed to start the car. Buy one of these. http://batterytender.com/product_info.php?products_id=2
