Stock or Lunati timing chain?
Stock or Lunati timing chain?
OK well I ordered a stock timing set from CMS and now I am having doubts if I should have gone with a Lunati. Will there be any difference? I really don't want to switch to a vented opti since I just replaced mine aobut 10k ago, so other chains are out of the question....
Thanks

Re: Stock or Lunati timing chain?
I have also seen the Lunati Timing chain in a few parts catalogs. Being a unvented opti guy I has always wondered how good they are compared to the likes of the LT4 HD unit and such. Doesn't Cloyes make a unvented timing chain also. Sorry no answer, just some additional thoughts.

Re: Stock or Lunati timing chain?
I have the Lunati. When I took it out of the box, the first thing I noticed was the cam gear and the crank gear had GM and their part numbers right on them. Basically they still use the GM parts for the gears. I installed the set on my 355. Then 2800 miles later the 355 lost a cylinder and the engine came out again for the 383 build. I was surprised to see that the Lunati chain had almost as much slack in it as my 48K mile stocker did when the engine was tore down for the 355 build. So at that point I summised that the Lunati is nothing more than a GM set repackaged from Lunati. BTW, the over all condition was still fine and I did reinstall it in the 383 build.

Hmm, so in other words save the cash and stick stock. Are there any other alternatives for nonvented fella's? I seriously cant come up with any other options

Re: Stock or Lunati timing chain?
I have a 94Z and am running what Cloyes calls there True Roller timing set. You can get them with a larger crank sprocket if you need to which is what I did.

Re: Stock or Lunati timing chain?
Id suggest Combination Motorsports version. Its $10 cheaper and people seem to have had good luck with it. Also, as far as I know, you should be able to use it with a non-vented with no problems what-so-ever.

EDIT--I AM WRONG!! You cannot run a true roller chain with a non-vented opti setup.

Re: Stock or Lunati timing chain?
So you converted your 93 nonvented to a vented opti. Thanks for the confirmation that there is no hope for nonvented guys.

Re: Stock or Lunati timing chain?
No, Im running a stock replacement chain. I havent had any problems with it but if I had to do it over again, I would upgrade.
The LT4 ED would fit at that point but then for the Cloyes an electric water pump would need to go on too.

How? did you change to a vented opti? I know they do make one for the un-vented optis that ours came with but are like $300
