Stock bottom end, lt1 headed car, Can I get it to 400rwhp+, need opinions on set up

Ok here's the deal I've got a bit of money saved up and have been looking at going with some ported stock heads and a cam. Basically I want to get as much power out of it as possible and still be able to drive it on the street without problems. I've been thinking of a custom grind something like a 234-238@.58lift with some steep ramp rates. If I get a good port job will I make it? If you have opinions on a setup that'll get me there let me know, also its a must that I keep my stock heads. Thanks Brad

the best port job in the world wont help you if your heads and cam dont match up.

I say 6psi, blower cam, heads by lloyd.

call combo up- let them do the thinking
I dont know if id want 500hp on a stock bottom end though...
just a "when" question at that point.

Well I am sure you could get close since you have a 6 speed. If you had an auto I would say 400 RWHP NA is not going to happen. Even with the M6 it will be tough but some people have done it.
Good Luck...

400rwhp without heads? It's possible, but I don't think you want to run in stock eliminator

If you want to make alot of naturally aspirated HP, than you will need to spend the $$$ on some good cyl heads.

400rwhp is very possible with the right head/cam/bolton combo.

My car made 371rearwheel with homeported heads/stock untouched valves, stock TB, cc306 cam, Hooker LT's, cutout, elec waterpump, 1.6 rockers (that were terribly loose, and rubbing on the valvecover supports)

Hopefully my car will hit 385-390 with the valves correctly adjusted, bigger TB, and the supports being cut out of the valve covers. I'm sure I was getting false knock from the rockers hitting the valve covers.

400 should be easy with a stage 2 professionally ported heads, and correctly adjusted valves. But every car is different.

I remember a post a while back of somebody making like 421 at the wheels with stock lt1 heads(i think they where ported by skaradom) and a custom grind cam of undiscloused specs(it was cc306ish from what I heard), threw shorty headers. Does anyone remember this? Chesee I'm just trying to give these ls1 guys a run for there money............and you too once your cars finished

I thought you meant STOCK lt1 heads as in unported.

If you are going to do ported factory LT1 heads, and a cam, than you can get 400+ rwhp with the right combination.

With the right cylinder head work you should be able to make 400 rwhp (350 ci) with a something like the XE224/230 on a 112 degree LSA. That's assuming a ~14% drivetrain loss (T56) which according to some of the data I've seen is a bit on the high side.

If you have emissions to consider, then there could be a problem getting there NA on a stock bottom with a hyd cam. Otherwise, it can and has been done, there was a 93 that made ~400 RW with stock heads even, 244/244 -114 solid roller though. I think his car was toasted some time back Vulva is his member name, JimS knows him, but I'd go with heads if you can afford it. Spend a few months thinking about your options and putting the dough/parts together.

If you can get it tuned, you'll see 400+ with the right setup.
