Steps In Converting a Series 2 Carrier into a Series 3

Hola Gentlemen(and those rare gems we call ladies),
I own a 95 Z28, I am about to attempt the infamous 4L60E to T56 swap and had a question in regards to the rearend. I am aware that my car carries the embarrassing(GU3) 2.73 rear end, and with the amount of mods I've done to my car, it only makes sense to upgrade. My goal is 3.73's, however before I order the gears (Moser 10 Bolt) I want to make sure the only difference between the two is the gears themselves. And not anything else such as housing rearend plate etc....
If you could explain any difference if at all, or have had experience on the install process, I would greatly appreciate it.
TIA.
Ruben F.

Since your current rearend has a 2.73 it has a series 2 carrier. If you want to upgrade to a 3.73 then you have to specify when you order that you need a 3.73 designed for a series 2 carrier. I would highly recommend going with a Strange Gear. I am not sure if Moser offers 3.73's for series 2 carriers. If they don't then you will have to upgrade your diff to a series 3 carrier and also buy a new reluctor gear.

Hola IDOXLR8,
1st off thx for the feedback, and resource to "US GEAR"
2ndly, Would you prefer leaving the rearend AS a series 2 carrier and only replacing the gears, or would you recommend replacing the rear end with a series 3 carrier and of course 3.73's?

I see that you are running forced induction, one of my future mods as well(as is everyones,) and am just curious if I leave the series 2 carrier with the 3.73's designed for it, that it will not be substantial enough to handle the power the blower forces.

Again Thanks.

One more thing, just to save time, are you aware of any reputable distributor's of "series 3 carrier's" or do you recommend I go off of GMpartsdirect?

In my opinion there is no need to upgrade to a series 3 carrier unless your current diff is bad. I was pushing over 500 rwhp out of my series 2 carrier with 3.73 gear without any problems. However once you start pushing alot of hp the rearend becomes less reliable. That is the main reason I upgraded to a Moser 9-in. If you decide to buy a series 3 carrier than I recommend going with an SLP takeoff unit ($99.00).

Thanks for the detail and your opinion on the Series 2 EDOXLR8.
I'll take your advice and find a manufacturer that carries 3.73's for a Series 2.
I of course won't go as extreme as an F1..(Holy $hit btw) = ) But I plan on getting a hold of a D-1SC relatively soon. Then I'll just blow it too Hell. And reinforce from their.

One more question if possible, the only difference between the carriers is internal... and has nothing involved with the length of a driveshaft for example...

The only difference between a 2 series and 3 series is the thickness of the flange that the ring gear bolts to.

IDOXLR8 & Anaik,
You guys have been more than helpful. And again I thank you for the time you spent answering my Thread.

That's just ONE more thing off my to do list... = )

Thx.

Ruben F.
Have a good weekend gentlemen:bow:
